Multi-Boot windows system

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a Dell Optiplex GX520, to multi-boot Windows98, 2000, XP
pro. I found the knowledgebase entry on microsoft's website, for setting this
up. I made 3 partitions. First one is FAT32, and the other two are NTFS. When
I try to install the first OS(Win98) on the first partition, I run through
the install process. After the first reboot, and then it finishes up
installing the OS, it gets to 16%-Installing Plug and play devices, and it
locks up. I can't seem to get past this.

It's a Dell - what did you expect? :)

I very much suspect that there's hardware in the G520 which is just not
compatible with WIn98 - but there's also likely to be a problem with the
vcache if you have more than 512MB of RAM installed

If you do have more than 512MB RAM, then the easiest thing to do is remove
the excess until you've finished loading Win98, and then modify the
system.ini [vcache] section with the line
MaxFileCache=512000
, save it, shut down, add the rest of the RAM, and carry back on.... If you
have more than 1GB, you may need to modify the [386Enh] section with the
entry
MaxPhysPage=40000
also

OTOH, it's probably easier to use VPC, and install Win98 under that on XP
and/orWin2K, and then you can have both 98 and the other OS running at the
same time :)

Thank you for your response.
The PC has exactly 512MB of RAM in it. Should I still try to use less than
that? The user I am setting the PC up for, specifically requested not to run
the OS's virtually.

I doubt that the ram is the problem as W98 has never had a problem with 512
mb.  The Dell you are installing W98 on appears to be fairly new and the
hardware is probably too advanced for W98.  You can try pulling all cards
but the video card and see if that will allow setup to complete.  If it
does, you can install one card at a time and see what is hanging the system.
For general info, I tried to multiboot a new Dell for a client about two
years ago and there were no W98 drivers available for the hardware so she
had to settle for XP.

Thanks, Ron - I thought I had responded to this thread yesterday, but it
seems that CRS is getting the better of me (or MS's servers are glitching
again?)

Hi Noel,

No CRS on your part--you responded the same day I did and there appears to
be something going on.  In Gen-Discussion, I replied twice to 98 guy in the
thread:  A farewell to Memphis.  Neither post is showing here.  I am going
to try it again this morning and see what happens.

Ah - that may be the problem!! - I think your Hard drive is a Western
Digital 160GB SATA2 device - you will certainly have to have the motherboard
(and drive?) set to use IDE Mode (although I would have thought that if it
wasn't already set that way that you would not have got that far!)

I changed the option in BIOS for the SATA HDD, to run in Combination mode(for
use with older operating systems). I could not find any setting for the
actual motherboard SATA options. I tried to install 98 again, and had the
same issue. Should I try turning off onboard devices(NIC, sound) in the BIOS?

NIC is one that often causes problems - so that may be a good one to kill
Sound?? - can't do any harm to turn it off

I really think you'd be better off asking in Dell's support groups, where
someone with detailed knowledge of Dell's practices may be able to assist.

The only thread that I can find there referencing GX520 and Win 98SE is also
unresolved - and has similar problems to yours
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_win98&message.
id=48478&query.id=106531#M48478

This does appear to be a problem with the implementation of the SATA system
on the motherboard.... see
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=oplex_other&messa
ge.id=20546&query.id=106604#M20546

I assume you don't have a partition manager installed which may be getting
in the way??

not sure (been a Looooonnnggg time!) whether msconfig, etc are available at
that point of an install

Yeah, that resolution will not working that early in the win98 install.

I contacted Dell about the issue. They said that this model computer was
never tested with the Win98 OS, and that they can not give support for the
install of it. The last thing I think I can try, is turning off the on-board
video card, and try to use a PCI video card. Unless you have any other
suggestions. If not, thank you for all your help anyway.

You might not be able to boot to Safe-Mode or use msconfig but after the
first boot the .ini files referred in the articles are on the drive and
they can be edited in a DOS session.

I think like Noel said that the hardware is simply too new for Windows
98 to properly recognize an use it.  Time to let go of Windows 98 I think...

John,

This is what I see when I try to edit the System.ini file.

[boot]
oefonts.fon=vgaoem.fon
shell=Explorer.exe
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll
user.exe=user.exe
gdi.exe=gdi.exe
sound.drv=mmsound.drv
dibeng.drv=dibeng.dll
comm.drv=comm.drv
mouse.drv=mouse.drv
keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv

I don't see anthing that says "Display.drv=pnp.drv"

I had the same problem starting a couple of years ago--W98 would not work
with the new hardware on a Dell and there were no W98 drivers available.  If
you really need W98, there is a MS program called VirtualPC.  You install
VirtualPC into XP and then install W98 in VirtualPC--that is what I am using
on my Dell with XP Multimedia.  The way it works is when everything is
installed, you boot XP, start VirtualPC and then boot W98.  W98 and XP work
at the same time and you can switch back and forth.

Try running setup again and when it hangs, turn the computer off for
several seconds, then back on.  If this doesn't help, try restarting in
Safe mode by tapping the F8 key during bootup.
