L.S. - 12 Jun 2008 15:57 GMT Have a laptop finally running and need an AV program. (See Invalid Hibernation partition/file???) Running AVG on all other systems(XP) but 98se can't handle 7.5 or 8.0... Would also like to load a firewall program, currenly running ZA on other systems also.
Any suggestions please,
Gary S. Terhune - 12 Jun 2008 18:12 GMT For AV, get Avast!. I don't generally run firewalls, so I'll keep my mouth shut on that one.

Terhune - 12 Jun 2008 19:20 GMT Avast! has a free Home Edition. You have to re-register for the free one each year, but that's the only nag.

I wish now I would have held on to my old win98se disks that had 98 programs on, i.e. Adobe Reader, etc. None of the newer version run on 98....
Have a great one,
L.
Ps You anywhere near the fires out there? http://www.grystmill.com/weather.htm

Terhune - 12 Jun 2008 23:29 GMT No big fires yet this year, but I had to evacuate last year due to the smoke from the Moonlight Fire. It was about 30 to 40 miles away but the smoke was impossible for me on some days.
As for legacy apps, I got tons, <g>. But you can probably find them out there on the net *without* having to give in to the "click here, now click here, now...." BS, or sign up for anything.
Of course, it helps to know the filename. like AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe. Or you search on "acroread 6.1" (without quotes) or "Acrobat Reader 6.1" (with or without quotes). You'll also want a copy of WinZip 8.1, not sure what else.

Got a son living in the Petrified Forest outside of Calistoga and they're on high alert.
I'll find the programs I need. Would have been easier to just throw in disk.
:) Already d/l winzip.

When I check the scanned count number on the Web Shield configuration page, it always shows 0. What can I do to solve this? http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-webshield-windows-98-95.html and http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-home-webshield.html

You'd have to locate an older download elsewhere, of the Win98-compatible installer. It's probably not worth the effort, as Avast is a much better product.

They now have 3.8 beta 4 out, these beta programs are free shareware versions, for a user to try free for typically 40 days, or so. Using this & Free Commander, at www.freecommander.com/, similar to the old Win3x File Commander but with many more features, I can open a compressed folder and view files, copy into, or out of, the compressed folder as though it is an ordinary folder. I have been using this on an old raid 5, using a rocket raid 454, www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/rr454.htm, daughter board with 5 WD160g drives, win98se server that was setup several years ago with no problems. All keyboard work is done from a win98 or win2k workstation with no, or very little, keyboard work done on the actual server. Win98 seems reasonably stable if you don't touch the keyboard. Re-boots only needed every 30 to 90 days or so, when CPU usage gets to high. I have, from time to time, 3 to 8 workstations working off the server, used for data mostly with only one server app on board for workstation access. Winrar also lets the user password protect the files created although a couple of features are restricted on the free beta copy. Each time it is run a pop-up nag appears to upgrade to the full version. Close makes it go away. I don't know if the latest beta works with win98 though as I have not run it.
