Upon normal startup, my Windows 98 screen comes up, then
won't go away.  It sounds like everything is loading
normally underneath, but the Windows screen is still
there, and I get an error ding with mouse clicks, etc.  I
can start in Safe Mode, but....

The problems began last week, when I could only get 16-
color.  Then the system couldn't find the modem...

HELP!!!!!

If you still have the color problem, reinstall your video display
adapter driver.  Your modem driver may need to be reinstalled as well.
