I first purchased and downloaded McAfee VirusScan from
their website.  It completely downloaded.  I launched the
downloaded program VSG8041EN.  It copied many files then
did nothing after that.  McAfee tech support gave must
several suggestions: quit all applications, delete the temp
file, download the program again.  After none of the
suggestions worked, McAfee suggested I purchase the CD
instead for an additional money.  I got my money back and
went to Nortons.  However, the same thing happened.  I
download the software and launched the downloaded file.  It
copied files to the TEMP folder including the installer.  I
launched the installer, the hour glass appeared for a
second and nothing else happened.  I used Nortons website
to scan my computer for viruses.  It found 4 ByteVerifers.
I removed them and tried to install Nortons.  Again it was
unsuccessful.  I am using Windows 98.  Anyone have a
suggestion while I wait for Nortons tech help?

Installer errors are usually fixed by updating the Windows Installer and/or
installing DCOM98.

Update the Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=32831

Install DCOM98:

Also, try this procedure:

Open Windows Explorer or My Computer.
Browse to the Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield folder.
Right-click the InstallShield folder, click 'Rename', name the folder
InstallShieldOld, and press Enter.

Reboot.
Open the Temp folder and delete all Temp files:
-Click Start>Run, type:   %temp%   and click OK.
-Press Ctrl+A to select all, then press Delete.

Delete the Temporary Internet Files:
-Click Start> Settings> Control Panel> Internet Options> General tab.
-Click the Delete Files button, then put a checkmark in the box to Delete all
offline content, and click OK, and OK.

Close all open windows and running apps.
Disable your anti-virus and screensaver.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and End Task on everything except Explorer and Systray.
Install the program in question.
