multiple instances of same program open

As soon as I double click any program in Windows, infinite
multiple instances of the same program open. What do I do?
Please help.

Are there lines under the files when you click?  Does the
mouse pointer turn into a finger pointer?  If so that may
account for the multiple instances.

Start>Settings>Folder Options

Choose either classic or custom then choose what settings
for custom via the button to the right.
