I don't know what I did to cause my problem but my computer
got somewhat mixed up.  My cd rom drives come and go on the
device manager.  I kept freezing or hanging. (rebooted
about 100 times).  I did everything humanly possible to
clean and defrag my machine including run my anti virus
program and my spy blaster.
Someone told me to reinstall Windows SE on top of what I
had, so I did and so far so good. The cd rom drives are
pretty stable now.
My question is: when I go into system tools to clean my
disk, it shows me that I have 160mgs listed, not checked
that can be cleaned out.  It says that if I am sure that I
won't be using the old Windows that I can delete these.
<When you installed Windows 98, Setup saved information
about your previous version of Windows. These files take up
a large amount of disk space. If you are sure you do not
want to return to your previous version of Windows, you
should delete these files.>  This is what is said.
Please Help me.  Thanks.

Did your installed programs continue to work after the reinstallation or did
you have to reinstall them?  Do you have both a Windows folder and a
Windows.000 folder?  What kind of a computer are you using?

My installed programs are okay and working.  I lost my cd
rom drives again tonight and my computer is
freezing/hanging again.  I looked for a windows.000 folder
but couldn't find one.  There are a whole bunch of 000's in
various things when I looked under find windows.

When you lose your CDRom, go to control panel, system, performance tab and
see if there is any mention about MSDos compatibility mode.

I am not comfortable telling you it is OK to delete the files because you
did not find what I expected you to find.  What I would do is find the
folder that was mentioned and rename it.  If nothing complains about the
folder being missing after a week or so, then delete it.  Should renaming
cause a problem, you can get into DOS with a Windows startup disk and rename
it back to what it was.  If you don't know how to do this or need a start up
disk, please advise.  I will need the path to the folder with the files.

I found a file named WINDOWS 000.000.  Is that the one you
meant?
And no mention of MSDos Compatibility mode in performance.
I can tho start my computer in msdos mode.
Waiting to hear from you.

I have not seen a double set of 000 on a Windows folder before--maybe more
than one reinstall was involved.  I would still locate the files and change
the name of the folder rather than deleting (it is easy to recover should
you need them--recovering deleted files can be tough).  When you checked for
the MSDOS compatibility mode statement, was this when your CD drive was not
being displayed in Explorer?

My read rom opens and closes but doesn't work and my write
one is just dead.
