computer lockup

dont understand your answer if the computer is turned on and it shows a 3x6
sqaure that says computer password with a key and nothing will change this
how can i start it in safe mode or enter anything if nothing will change.

I don't know who you are responding to but I'll take a crack at it.  Is the
very first thing you see on your monitor the 3 X 6 rectangle--there is no
memory (ram) count, there is no writing telling you what key to click to
enter setup (BIOS), etc?

I don't know if mike knows who he/she is.  There are at least three threads
in two newsgroups running on the exact same question from the same person.
I have suggested that mike check his/her computer manual and/or the Compaq
web site for instructions on disabling the boot-up password which he/she has
somehow set.
