Ok i have a problem...      Every program i have on my computer now
opens with wordpad. I can't figure out how to change them back so they
open properly. All i can see on word pad is a bunch of cymbals and
numbers and the only thing i can actually read is "this file can not be
opened in dos. mode" What do i do? is there a way to open the files
with there default file associations? Please help me i cant do crap on
my computer!

See if you can do this:

Make up a file from the lines below. Copy into a file called fix.reg
which should be created in Notepad. Do not retype, copy in case of
errors. The 1st line in the file is  the line REGEDIT4
The last line must be blank.
Make sure your mail or news reader does not add any spaces to the end
of a line.
Doubleclick to restore the association.

-----copy below this line fix.reg------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile]
@="Application"
"EditFlags"=hex:d8,07,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open]
@=""
"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"

---- end file above here

ok well i tried that it pulled up an error message that said ...

Cannot import C:\documents and Settings\User\My Documents\fix.reg: The
specified file is not a registry script.
You can only imprt binary registry files from with the registry editor.

Now what do i do?
Alan Edwards - 01 Oct 2005 23:52 GMT
You tried what?
First you quote messages so I know what you are talking about.
Second, you try again and ensure you have done it correctly but try
moving fix.reg to a folder with no spaces in the name or open
Regedit.exe and import the file.

I can't recall seeing that error message in Win98. Are you really
using XP instead?

Im not using win98. Im using windows xp.

Questions about Windows XP should be asked in a newsgroup associated with
XP - if you ask your questions in a Windows 98 newsgroup people will assume
you are using Windows 98 and there is a risk that you will receive
inappropriate advice.
