Hi guys,

Having trouble installing drivers for a PCI sata card.

In the device manager it tells me there is a conflict with the IRQ (11)
which seems to be shared by a number of things - sound card, USB controller
etc..

Says it needs its own IRQ.

Looking at sys info I find that all the IRQ's are all taken (00 -15).

sys info also reports a problem with IRQ management - is this a bios
problem?

I noticed that there is nothing on COM1&2 and so disabled COM1 (mouse on
COM4) and gave the driver that IRQ (in Safe Mode) but although the conflict
was no longer reported the driver still had a yellow mark and does not work.

Any ideas?

If the devices currently using IRQ11 are PCI devices then it should be quite
OK for multiple devices to be using the one IRQ. If the SATA card is a PCI
card then it should share also. Are you quite sure it says that it needs
its own IRQ, or is that just one of a generic list of possible causse for
the error? A PCI card usually does not require its own IRQ.

If it really needs its own IRQ then go into BIOS setup and remove IRQ11 from
the list of IRQs available to PCI. This means that IRQ11 will not be
assigned automatically to the existing PCI devices and they will all find
new IRQs. IRQ11 will then be available for the new device.

However your experience to date with using a different IRQ indicates that
probably won't solve the problem. Have you consulted the manufacturer's www
site and worked through the installation FAQ?

Hi,

In sysinfo under problem devices is a list of several items IRQ Holder for
PCI IRQ steering (code=9) - are these a separate issue?

Then the Via is listed with the following message:

VIA VT6421 RAID Controller
SCSIAdapter
This Device Has a Problem: Code=30 (0x1E)
This device is using an Interrupt Request (IRQ) resource that is in use
by
another device and cannot be shared. You must change the conflicting setting
or remove the real-mode driver causing the conflict.

I just thought that the problem was that whatever is supposed to manage the
IRQ sharing was not functioning or something but the fact that when it got
its own IRQ it didn't work either, I concluded it was something else.

Following the exact same installation procedure (i.e. the instructions) I
have no problem installing in XP (IRQ 19)

The IRQ holder is not an issue - it will exist for each IRQ that is assigned
to PCI.

What are the other devices using IRQ11? If it includes a VIA modem
(probably on the motherboard) then this is the problem. It might be a
component of the modem, such as the A/D device.

Have you checked in BIOS setup and how is IRQ11 set for PCI usage? Is it
allocated to some other device as well (BIOS shouldn't allow this, but who
knows).

Have you tried the card in another slot? All PCI slots are theoretically
equal, but the slot does affect the order in which IRQs are assigned to
devices, so changing the slot sometimes changes how things get allocated.

Just an update.

I think it probably has something to do with IRQ steering or some such fancy
stuff but I moved the SATA card to a different PCI slot and the driver
installed perfectly.

When I checked the device according to 'connection' it appeared to share the
same connection as the sound card, which prompted me to try it elsewhere.

It is notable that it now has a different IRQ (5).

Anyone like to explain?

Moving the card to another slot can sometimes change the IRQ that gets
assigned, because the order of assignment to devices changes. In some cases
slot 1 is associated with the video card and has some special requirements.

It's probably not associated with steering - you can delete the holding
devices if you like and Windows will simply re-install them. They only
affect you if you have removable PCI devices.

It seems as if the PCI device on IRQ11 won't share properly. All PCI
devices are supposed to share, but the manufacturers don't always get it
right.
