Finepix software

I just got a Finepix S5100 (xD 16mb card) and installed the software
package on my Thinkpad with W98SE.

Normally when trying to start the viewer it tells me it can't start
because of a missing DDRAW.DLL and says there is no USB attached.  There
are DDRAW.DLLs all over the place and attaching the camera is what
triggers the calling of the viewer, so there must be a USB attached.
And, in fact, sometimes I can get it to work.

When it fails to start it says PLEASE REINSTALL.  Then instantly upon
attempting to run it it does the exact same  failure and PLEASE
REINSTALL again.

On occasion I have had it go ahead and start and transfer pictures.  (By
golly, there must have been a DDRAW.DLL after all!!!) But if I
disconnect, take more pictures and try to connect again it fails the
same way.

However, if I leave the camera disconnected I can start the program
alone, THEN connect the camera and make transfers.  Except that. . .  If
I have rebooted the laptop in the mean time I'm back to square one where
it declares there is no DDRAW.DLL and that I must reinstall the
software.

I'm wondering if there is an update to the software, but you have to run
the non-functional software in order to call for an update, a catch 22.

I've reinstalled this silly thing about 10 times with no improvement.

Anybody have this software and got it to work?  Any suggestions?

Stumbled over the answer.  Part of the installation came up UNDER the
install screen and never got done.  I was checking on something else
when I found it this time.
