I lost all sound.  Speaker icon in task bar not
visible.  Please advise how/where to look to make
fix.
I have looked at volume contol, device manager,
multi-media.  Device Manager is all grey--can not
modify--eg check to show volume control--its checked
but page is greyed out.  When try to correct at
media, volume, and other places--get message like
"sound not operating"  Duh--that's what I am trying
to fix.
I downloaded via audio system file, but it does
not seem to install/operate.  File is there,
but does not work.
ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED.   THANK YOU, HAL

In Control Panel > Multimedia, does it show the correct device as the Preferred
Device?  When you mention "Device Manager is all grey--can not modify", what part
of/in DM is gray, all of it or just the sound?
Have you tried starting up in Safe Mode and removing any/all Sound devices,
rebooting and reinstalling the drivers?

Brian,   Thank you for reply.
The whole screen for Device Manager--Audio tab is grey--
recessed--
can't activate.  Under preferred device says none!?!
I removed the audio device from Device Manager in
system icon of control panel.  It did not reappear
after rebooting.  Where is it--how correct this/reinstall?

I was going to remove more as you suggested--but now
I am reluctant to do it with out more knowledge.

Device Manager and Multimedia are 2 separate items. If it showed None as the
preferred device in MM > Audio tab, from what I read you could not make any changes.
If None shows as a Preferred device, than none is what it will use. You nee to
reinstall the sound drivers.

When you removed the Audio/Sound Device in DM, did you do this in Safe Mode and
remove any/all entries as mentioned. You must remove all entries for that device to
make sure you are not leaving a corrupt one.

Do you know the Manufacturer, Model Name and Model# of your Sound Device? Is it
onboard (integrated) or is it an adapter card?
