from dos you can go to the folder called recycled...
then rename the file in there as explorer.exe and move it to your windows
folder.
the files in the recycle bin will have their names changed...

Like you Judy, I have tried just about everything I have
found on here, and I thank everyone for all the info and
help, but so for. I am not any better off than before.
However, at least now I can access the Windows File
manager. But thats all that comes up when I do boot. I
will not give up, sooner or later this will be fixed. I
have confidence.

1. None of your data files is deleted (unless
you deleted any); they will survive reinstalling
the operating system, if you need to.
2. You probably need to reinstal, therefore
will require either the Win95 CD and the
Win98 upgrade CD, unless the working
parts of either were copied to your hard
drive as CAB files and SETUP.EXE

How did you delete Explorer? If you did it in DOS, then it will not be
in the Recycle Bin. I guess you may grab one off any other Win98, and
put it into C:\Windows.
This may also work to give you back Explorer & your Desktop...

(1)
(a) Hold Ctrl as you boot for the Startup Menu, if it hasn't already
been activated at "START, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button". Select to
boot to the "Command Prompt Only" (DOS).
(b) Alternatively, get a Startup Diskette from
http://www.bootdisk.com/ , if you don't already have one from "Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab". Put the diskette in &
turn on the computer.
(2) At DOS...
(a) Enter "EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini"
(b) In the [Boot] section, change "Shell=Explorer.exe" to
"Shell=Progman.exe"
(c) Alt-F-X-ENTER (pressed separately) to exit Edit. (TAB may prove
useful, if you wish to exit w/o saving changes.)
(d) Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows running Progman. (Remove floppy first.)
(3) In Progman, over-install IE, which basically is E. (I only hope it
doesn't ask for an internet connection. Perhaps, select "Custom" & only
check the items that have a bold checkbox, to avoid it will want the
internet. OTOH, it might be better to let it connect, if your DUN
allows.)
If you are IE6, "ie6setup.exe" will be in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update
Setup Files". (You may also use the copy in "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer", which is "C:\Progra~1\Intern~1" to DOS.)
(a) In Progman, "File menu, Run, Browse button".
Folders pane will be open at "C:\Windows" with sub-folders below
it. Otherwise, make it so.
(b) Scroll down the Folders pane & D-Clk "window~1".
Now the left (File Name) pane should show "ie6setup.exe"
(c) DON'T DO IT UNNECESSARILY, but D-CLK "ie6setup.exe" I guess runs it.
If you are IE5, "ie5setup.exe" will be in "C:\Windows Update Setup
Files". (You may also use the copy in "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer", which is "C:\Progra~1\Intern~1" to DOS.) I do not suppose you
should run "ie5setup.exe", if you have installed IE6. This one would be
only for those who never did install IE6.
(a) File menu, Run, Browse button.
Folders pane will be open at "C:\Windows" with sub-folders below
it.
(b) D-Clk "C:\" in the Folders pane to go up one level.
(c) Scroll down the Folders pane & D-Clk "window~1".
(d) "ie5setup.exe" now appears in the left (File Name) pane.
(e) DON'T DO IT UNNECESSARILY, but D-CLK "ie5setup.exe" I guess runs it.
(4) Reboot back to DOS. Then...
(a) Enter "EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini"
(b) In the [Boot] section, change back to "Shell=Explorer.exe"
(c) Alt-F-X-ENTER to EXIT. (TAB may prove useful, if you wish to exit
w/o saving changes.)
(d) Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows. (Remove floppy first.)
