Start-up problem

Got an old Gateway P400 machine from eBay, and installed extra memory, CD
Drives, plus HD from an old Gateway with a dead mobo. All well - memory
recognised, CD drives work fine, HD recognised and fully accessible. BUT -
whenever I reboot it, it hangs on the splash screen. If I then shut the
machine down with the power switch, and then re-boot, it boots just fine !

Any ideas just how I might diagnose and fix this problem ?

98SE, MS Security update CD installed (problem pre-dated this as well).

TIA

I suspect that some program is not shutting down correctly--use this
procedure to try to identify it:

Ron,

You sure ? The shut-down works fine, every time (and I know that 98 has had
it's share if shutdown problems) - it's the  - or rather "every other"
start-up that is the problem. But I will indeed check the link - thanks.
I'll also check whether there is any difference if I do shutdown/cold boot
as opposed to a restart.

Thanks
JP
