I have a problem where IE will not bring up any page (immediately goes to a
page cannot be displayed, invalid syntax error).  This happens for any and
all sites, external or internal to my network through IP address or by name
(www.microsoft.com).

I've tried re-installing IE6 but it errors out when initializig setup (Setup
was unable to install all components.).  I've also done a complete in-place
re-install of Windows 98, I've cleared all networking components and
re-installed.  I can ping by name without a problem.

Any ideas?

See if an IE repair helps:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, double click Internet
Explorer, *Not a IE update Q file*, and select Repair.

Try running the Winsock repair tools on the very bottom
of this page:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

It is best if you run one or both of the following first:

Download/install/run Ad-Aware from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
This will detect any spyware on your system. When you run Ad-Aware, click on
the ref update to get the latest up-to-date ref file, run Ad-Aware and
delete everything it finds.

If you are more advanced, then download/install/run:
Spybot - Search & Destroy from :
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Hope this helps.

Tried that, didn't work.  After some playing around, I tried to open an ftp
site and received an error about a missing dll, msasn1.dll.  I copied the
dll from a working win98 system and I can now browse the internet.  Trying
an ftp now crashes internet explorer though. :-(

Download/run Cool Web Shredder from:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

For Info on Cool Web Search Variants:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Then download/install/run Ad-Aware to detect/rid of any other parasites/spyware
that may be installed. It can be obtained free from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
After installing Ad-Aware, open it and click on the ref update to get the latest
up-to-date ref file, then run Ad-Aware and delete everything it finds.

And/or download/install/run:
Spybot - Search & Destroy:
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run it at it's default settings until you learn an know more about it.

If you still have problems, download/run HijackThis from:
http://www.merijn.org/
Do not remove anything with it until you get advice on what to remove, HJThis
will list many apps that are needed along with the bad ones. Read the quick
start here on how to create a log file that can be copied/pasted into a forum
that can provide assistance on removal of unwanted pests.
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/#quick

Then post the logs to an appropriate NG here where they specialize in
spyware/hijacker removal:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/

It's also a good idea to have a HOSTS file to block bad sites, scroll to HOSTS
File Manager here:
http://www.mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software.htm

Another good app is SpywareBlaster which stops the badboys before they even get
a chance to install:

I'm very familiar with removing spyware and such...  I had actually burnt
ad-aware and spybot to a CD and installed it on the system before IE was
even working (couldn't run the updates though).  Even after removing all the
trash, IE was still broken.  The problem was the missing dll that didn't pop
up that it was missing until I tried to connect to an ftp site.  IE works
now after restoring that dll.

I'm not sure why connecting to an ftp site is crashing IE now though, but
it's not a big deal.
