I had to delete the following file from my
computer...C:\windows\sp.dll because it contained a
virus. Now when I turn my computer on it says it cannot
import this file. My computer seems to be running ok. My
question is...will not having this file affect my computer
and/or how can I get the file back?

Click "Start", "Run", type "msconfig" and click "OK". Then
click on the "Startup" tab and look for "sp.dll". If you find
it, uncheck it and click "OK".

I found the following at
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/dlllibrary/sp/
sp - sp.dll - DLL Information
DLL File: sp or sp.dll
DLL Name: Adware DLL
Description: Adware that sets your homepage address to an address used by
the adware author.
Part Of: IE
System DLL: No
Common Errors: File Not Found, Missing File, Exception Errors
You might want to run msconfig.exe and click on the Startup tab. Look for an
entry pointing to sp.dll and clear the check mark from in front of it.
Close, reboot.

Start > Run, type in: sysedit and hit enter. Click on the Win.ini title bar to
bring it to the front, look at the Run= line, if there is anything pertaining to
sp.reg after the = remove it so that all remains is Run=, save and close out.
Next go to Start > Run, type in: regedit and hit enter, navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Remove any reference to SP or sp.reg in the right pane and close out.
*Note-Before deleting any entry/ies, click on it once to highlite it, go to
Registry on the Menu bar, click on Export Registry File, place a check next to
Selected Branch, name it and save it to the desktop. This way if something
should go amiss, you can double click the .reg file to export it back in.

Download/install/run Ad-Aware to detect/rid of any other parasites/spyware that
may be installed. It can be obtained free from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
After installing Ad-Aware, open it and click on the ref update to get the latest
up-to-date ref file, then run Ad-Aware and delete everything it finds.
And/or download/install/run:
Spybot - Search & Destroy:
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D can not detect some of the newer variants of
parasites/spyware. Download/run Cool Web Shredder from the same link provided
below for HJThis.
If you still have problems, download/run HijackThis from:

Then post the logs in a response in this thread or to an appropriate NG here

You need to remove an entry made in the Run key of the registry, and delete a couple of files....sp.reg and sp.dll, in the Windows folder.
Click Start>Run, and type REGEDIT and click OK.
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
In that key you will find this value and data in the right-hand pane:
value: SP
data: regedit -s c:\Windows\sp.reg
Delete that entire entry.
Also, see here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#Jethomepage
and
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/TinyBar.html
In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds.

Bert Kinney, a MS-MVP, has posted this in the past, about sp.reg:
<paste>
I found this on a search of Google.
Jethomepage is an unethical organization who wants to
hijack your browser and take you to their site. They
think we will just be nice and go along like sheep.
They insert a key into your registry under
localmachine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
the key name is sp, and the value is
regedit -s c:\Windows\sp.reg
DELETE THIS KEY.
You can also delete sp.reg and sp.dll from your Windows
folder.
The effect of their little trick is to reset the registry
each time you startup or logon, and keep their shabby
little search page in your face. The effect of their
registry settings, at least in my case, was to open their
rotten little search window as a left-hand panel in MSIE,
then maximize my browser and goof up my toolbars.
Deleting the key stops the program from running upon
startup/logon.
</paste>
