When I boot my machine I get the LOGON dialogue box asking for name and of course password

As this is my personal machine I have absolutely no use for this dialogue and want to get rid of it. Anybody out there that can tell me how to get rid of the LOGIN screen on boot/startup

Operating WIN98SE, no network no nothing just a standalone machine I use on the boat

Thanks

Hi Gord,

Go to Control Panel - Passwords - User Profiles.
Check All users use the same settings.
Do not reboot at this point.

Control Panel - Network - Primary Network logon
set to Windows logon.  Reboot.

When the machine reboots, enter a user name and
leave the password  blank.  Click Ok, not Cancel.
If asked to confirm the blank password, click Ok, not Cancel.

(Is this your error?)

Problem Description:
When trying to access the Windows Update web site, Win98/ME customers may see the following error:

Access Denied
Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates on your computer.

If you believe you have received this message in error, please check with your system administrator.

Resolutions:
To resolve this issue, please follow these steps:

1.  Click on Start, Run and type "regedit" (w/o the quotes).  The Registry Editor will open.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 98/ME. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

2.  Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

3.  You should see a key called "NoWindowsUpdate".

Check the data value for this key.  In order to access the Windows Update site, the data value should be a zero "0".  If the value is set to a one "1", then your PC is currently configured to DENY access to the Windows Update site.  You need to change the value of this key to a zero "0" to allow your PC access to the site.  To change the data value, double-click on the key name and set the value to a zero "0".

4.  Once the data value has been changed, close the registry editor, reboot your PC and try the Windows Update site again.

If after verifying that the NoWindowsUpdate key is set to a zero "0" and re-booting your PC you are still seeing the Access Denied error on the Windows Update web site, then try these steps:

1.  Open the Registry Editor.
2.  Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

3.  Select the "NoWindowsUpdate" key and Delete it.
4.  Close the registry editor, reboot your PC and try the site again.

For more steps to try, refer to this Microsoft KB article:

Issue Applies To:
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition

Sort of but not quite it i

ADMINISTRATORS ONL

To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure
-------

Note If you are running a Windows 2000 (except DataCenter), Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 operating system, you can run the local administrator account on your computer without having to log off and then log on again

It then goes on to give me some WIN2000 and NT fixes but absolutely no mention of a WIN98 solution. No network other than my cable internet connection
