Hi Gang,
I downloaded dx90update_redist.exe and tried to install that on my custom
system (Albatron kx600-8xv, AMD Barton, 512MB RAM) with Windows 98SE.
The installation program created an internal error:

The program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program
vendor.

I have never been able to get DX90b to install on 98SE
without severe issues that ultimately result in the
requirement to format my HD to continue to use my computer
properly. Anyone have suggestions we're missing?

Hi,
You might want to download a fresh copy and try again. Be sure to
disable anti-virus software; even better-> use ctrl-alt-delete to "end
task" everything except explorer and then do the install.
I have updated several SE boxes without a problem using the redist. package.

I installed DirectX9.0b on my Win98SE without a problem.
However, I did take the precaution to delete my Temp Internet Files, my
Windows\Temp files, empty my Recycled Bin, did a scandisk, Registry cleanup,
DeFragged, and then ,made sure no other programs were running except
Explorer before I installed it.
It went without a hitch.
Perhaps, do the same and try the install again.
PS: On some MB's that have anti-virus for their boot in the BIOS, you should
disable that also before attempting to install such an invasive program as
DirectX 9.0b

Have you used the Windows security cd. That should update your system
to the newest Direct X with ease.
