Windows Updates Crash System

I installed the critical updates and service packs through
Windows Update and Windows 98SE crashed. Internet Explorer
kept closing, PowerPoint Viewer wouldn't run, then it got
to where it wouldn't defrag. After formatting, then
reinstalling Windows 98SE, I tried the Windows Update
again...same result.

Any suggestions to fix this problem?

Fastest way to a basket case is to apply everything found
at WU site in one go as you've found out the hard way.
Obvious opposite is to apply only one update at a time,
I'd start with the smallest and oldest myself.
