Hi, this is my 1st time trying to get help here, forgive
me if I'm in the wrong place. My system is Windows 98SE.
Up until about 2 weeks ago, the system was running
fine...maybe just a little slow. However, in the last
couple weeks we have encountered a huge problem. We will
be on the computer for anywhere between 10 minutes and an
hour and all of the sudden it freezes. Sometimes, after a
minute or so, it will move on, other times it does not. I
hit ctrl-alt-del to restart it and a message says...there
is not enough free memory to run this program. We have not
downloaded anything in several weeks except for Outlook
express 6.0. I have been told to get rid of some programs,
but I'm not sure which ones I need and which ones I don't.
I have zone alarm, which seems to be stopping a lot of
entries lately and also PC Cillion. I am using IE 6 for a
browser, but I am also using SBC yahoo sometimes and I
have a DSL connection. Does anyone know what I should
keep, and what I should get rid of. I have plenty of space
on my C-drive, about 75% free. Any help on what or where
to go would be great. Thanks in advance.

What program are you running when this error message comes up? There
is a special case scenario involving "...not enough free memory..."
and Defrag.
This error message is also sometimes incorrectly produced in response
to a problem involving System Resources. Next time the error happens
open Control Panel - System - Performance and see what value is being
reported for "free system resources". If it is less than 20% then it
may well be a system resources rather than a memory issue.
Post the result back here and we will proceed to the next step in
resolving your problem.
Good luck

If you did not install any new software that could use all your resources.
Look for parasites.
This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware, parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.
