Are any of you Windows 98ers having problems with your CD/DVD ROM? Mine hasn't
worked for several weeks. I understand this is a big problem for many users of
Windows XP. I have Windows 98, second edition. When I install a CD or DVD, I
hear that it's "trying" to work. There are faint noises, as if it's about to
start, and then it just stops. I've been "troubleshooting" for nearly a week,
to no avail. I have a Dell PC that's 4 years old. Any ideas?

Clean the Drive

If cleaning the CD-ROM or DVD does not resolve the issue,
clean the disc drive using a CD-ROM or DVD drive cleaning
disc if you have one. If you do not have one, obtain one
after all other steps in this article have failed to resolve
the issue. Drive cleaning discs are available in most
computer or home electronics stores.

#####

Someone told me just this week that a large percentage of CD
- DVD problems are caused by dust.  IMO, you should make it
easy on yourself and trouble shoot your problem with this in
mind first.

Thanks very much for your help. I have a question about those disc-drive
cleaning discs . . .I saw several different brands at the store. Some have 6
"brushes;" some have only one "brush." Which is better? Also, some were just
cleaning discs, but some had some speaking and instructions  on them, and since
the drive doesn't work, I won't get any audio or video to hear and see the
instructions and to click on various links.

If you look carefully, you may be able to see the where the
light that reads your CD is located.  Clean it off with a
long handled cotton swab & alcohol or a can of compressed
air.

Forewarned is forearmed: static electricity isn't your
friend.

Good Luck!
