VBA Help Files, Not Working Under Win98

I have been running "Office97 Professional" under "Windows98 SE" for the
last couple of years.  I use Word, Excel and Powerpoint all the time and
they work fine.

Today, I started working on an Excel97 VBA programming project.  I have
not done any VBA programming since my Win95 days over 2 yrs ago.  To my
chagrin, I found that the VBA help files were nowhere to be found on my
hard drive, so I had to fish out the release CD and copy them over
manually.  Then they came up but are not working correctly.  I just
booted an old Win95 machine where they installed correctly and work just
fine.

When the help files come up, I get the Index & Find tabs, but the
Contents tab is missing.  Ditto when I press F1 ... no Contents tab.  If
I open the help file directly off the CD, the Contents tab is there, but
some of the topics are missing.  Then, if I copy the *.hlp to my hard
drive, and open it there, the Contents tabs are gone!  Very perplexing!
This behavior is not limited to Excel.  It happens across the board for
all Office97 apps.

I just spent an hour surfing the Microsoft KB and a bunch of
newsgroups.  There are endless references to similar problems that
others have experienced, but I can't make heads or tails of the
solution, if there is one.  I am hoping one of you MVP's can tell me
what is going on and what the fix is?

Please reply here and email me off list too if possible.

Thx in advance!
Yours,

Just a hint, do not use your real e-mail address or you will be
inundated with spam/spyware and or virus laden attachments.  At least
add unknown or something to that effect to lessen automated scanners
from stealing your e-mail address.  I use a e-mail address for
businesses and strangers as well as another one that is only for
family and close friends.  Both are real e-mail addresses but the
first one accumulates lots of junk mail.

Henry,

As I told you in an email, I'm not currently equipped to help you directly,
though I gave you MSDN Library online as an alternate source for VBA
reference. Mostly, I'm posting this here so I can find this thread again,
easily.

Hmmm.  As I remember it, I selected options during the install process
to have those files installed.

That doesn't surprise me.  You cannot just copy them manually, AFAIK.

You said "installed" ??  Why not run the Office 97 install
and elect to install the VBA help files?

WHOOPS!  False alarm folks.  Problem solved.  I uninstalled and reinstalled
and everything is fine now.

Apparently when I installed, I saw some gray checkmarks and read the help
text and it mentioned the VBA help files, so I assumed they were being
installed.  Not so.  I had to click down one more level, and in fact, the
reason for the gray checkmark was because the VBA help files were unchecked,
unbeknownst to me!  So by changing the gray checkmark to a dark black
checkmark, the help files were installed properly.

Many thanks to both Gary and Hugh whose advise was heeded and solved the
problem!

Best,
<<Henry>>

Next time do not uninstall/reinstall unless absolutely necessary. As Hugh
pointed out, all you had to do was run the setup and select add/remove
components to install individual ones.
