I have been given directions on how to
remove XP from our second computer,
so we can install Win98se,  the directions call for
a boot disk, but none was supplied
(purchased second hand HP Pavillion with installed software)
Thank you.

In your particular case, I would leave well enough alone.

You can make a boot disk from My Computer and right click
on floppy but it will not help you "uninstall XP". There
is no option to uninstall. You can format and install Win
98 but why would you want to? You can go to bootdisk.com
and download the boot disk to install win 98. Win 98 is
crap. I have to wonder why you would want to go back to
it? You should remove the gum from the inside of your
head before you make a big mistake.

98SE works well for me but each user is entitled to their own opinion.
I think that you know very little about how operating systems work.  I
started programming in BASIC on an IBM PCjr.

Win 98SE is the best Windows OS outside of the NT
family, or perhaps you prefer Me?

I also use it on my ThinkPad 760. It is an old machine
with limited HD space (2.5GB) and RAM (32MB)
and Win98SE does what I need it to do, which is Word
processing and Internet surfing.

I would not choose ME in any circumstance.  I would rather switch to
XP Professional.

I guess this is an extension of yesterday's post.
A 98 boot disk will not see NTFS part of the HD. So it
will not be able to format something it can not see. If I
am wrong? Let someone point it out.

DOS will not see an NTFS partition. FDISK may see it, depending on the
version, as a non-DOS partition. If it doesn't see it then it can't delete
it. If it sees it as a non-DOS partition it may still refuse to touch it (on
the theory it shouldn't fiddle with something it doesn't understand), so it
might not be possible to use FDISK to delete the NTFS partition. In that
case an alternative is simply to zap the partition table, for which a
variety of utilities are available.

Richard, do you have the weblink for the latest FDISK for 98SE or is
the latest version already included on the Windows 98 Second Edition
cd?

It is not on the W98SE installation CD. For full details, check here:

Thank you, I really appreciate it Richard.  I wonder why this update
is not on the Windows Update site?  Thanks again and have a great
night.

The way I have removed Windows NT, 2K or XP is creating
the boot disk for Win 98 (www.bootdisk.com is good suggestion),
then I use FDISK, select delete partition, select delete non-DOS
partition, confirm and the partition is gone. I repeat this for any other
partitions on the disk. I then get out of FDISK, reboot, get back into
FDISK, enable big disk support, create new partition, set it to Active,
get out, reboot (sigh) and when I am back at the a:> prompt I insert
my Win 98SE CD and run install (or setup, I don't recall).

In fact, I am going to do this today, so if I run into any trouble I'll
post my findings here tomorrow.

It seems like a lot of people are backing up, formatting their hard
disk(s) and reinstalling Windows to clear up all the useless junk on
their computers.  I just formatted and reinstalled Windows 98SE
because it was getting too cluttered with junk and not working up to
my high standard.

Bless you Saga,
I followed your advice, and I have Win98se working like a charm.
on my previous WinXP machine (good riddance to that)
I only have one hiccup, when install loaded a VGA default
monitor setting and I only have 16 colors.
I shall start a new thread for that query.
