Problem with Upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 98 SE

I have a desktop PC running Windows 95 which I wish to upgrade to
Windows 98 SE.
I obtained a bona fide copy of Microsoft Windows98 (Second Edition)
Upgrade, labelled as "for users of Windows 3.1x and Windows 95".

When I run the CD, it checks my machine for disk space, etc., then
asks me to enter the Product Key.  After I enter the Product Key from
the bck of the CD sleeve, I get the following error message from
Setup:

"The Windows 98 files that are required for this upgrade cannot be
found on your computer.  You must first install a complete version of
Windows 98 before installing Windows 98 SE."

That's exactly what I thought this version of the product was supposed
to do!!!  I know there's a product that upgrades users of Win98 to
Win98 SE ... but that's NOT the one I'm using.

I'd would be very grateful for any help with this puzzling situation.
Many thanks in advance to anyone able to offer any guidance.

It sounds like an update cd from Windows 98 to 98SE.  Have you tried
to contact Microsoft by phone for help in your situation?  If it has
to do with security or they may even help you for free with this kind
of install issue.

Yes, I tried contacting Microsoft by phone.  As the free support
period for Windows 98 has ended, they demanded $35 to talk to me about
my problem.  No offer of free help with the install issue at all!

If this is a legitimate upgrade CD, you can insert the CD with your prior
version of Windows 95/98 when Setup complains that it can't find the
qualifying product on your hard drive and tell Setup to look there for what
it wants.

Yes, it is indeed a legitimate upgrade CD, with Microsoft "Genuine"
holograph and all that, including certificate and product key.  Setup
is NOT complaining that it can't find the "qualifying product" on my
hard drive ... rather, it is complaining that it can't find Windows 98
files -- even though the CD is labelled as upgrading from Windows 95.
Also, the error message I receive gives no opportunity to "tell" Setup
anything ... it simply has an "OK" button, which quits the Setup
process when pressed.  I've tried this a few times to no avail.
Richard G. Harper - 23 Apr 2004 00:17 GMT
That isn't even remotely right.  Are you sure it's an upgrade and not an
"updates" CD?  The Upgrade CD works exactly as I said it does - I just
checked mine to be sure.  :-)

Maybe someone had an update cd and managed to make it appear to be an
upgrade cd.  It is amazing what software pirates can do with
technology nowadays.  Also, this is another good reason for Microsoft
to release Windows 98SE in a new updated format for the masses.  I
have contacted investor services and found I have until June 1, 2004
to submit my proxy for continuing the 9x line.  I hope I can persuade
a majority of the shareholders to back me.  Have a great day, Richard!

You don't have a ghost of a chance.  Longhorn is late, and stripped
of anything worthwhile, with half of the developers working on
Security instead.  Microsoft will not have a decent new Windows
version out until 2010.  ME, 2000 and XP did not set the world
on fire.  Microsoft has no interest or intention of reviving 98SE.

I proposed many of the same ideas that you did, as did others before
me.  I gave up posting my desires, but not before forecasting that, if
Microsoft didn't do it, someone else (Sun Microsystems or IBM) would.

Sun Microsystems has teamed up with Wal*Mart to market computers
equipped with the new Java Desktop System, including Office software.
Installation is a breeze, and the computers work just fine, starting at $299.

Time will tell as to what impact this development will have.

You won't have to tell Steve or Bill.  They already know.

I will have to look into the prospect of one of these computers as a
future computer.  Do you have a weblink about this or any more
details?

I appreciate the links, Hugh.  This is the first time I have heard
about this product.  I will study the information with due diligence.
Have a great day!

I was looking at the Wal-Mart site and you can get an Intel 3.0
gigahertz with hyper-threading for about $700.  The web-links were
really interesting.  Thanks again for all the information, Hugh.

Thank Microsoft.  Their refusal to give the customers what they want,
in favor of providing what they want to provide, opened the door
to competition, which hopefully will benefit the consumer eventually.

Thank Microsoft.  I found out from Microsoft about the availability
of the new desktop OS, believe it or not.  Who'da thunk.

Okay, Thank you Microsoft, for not providing a new Windows 98 Second
Edition and thus allowing the competition to take market share away
from you.
