I need someone's advice.
My computer, I guess like everyone's, as always given once
in a long while a fatal error or an error of a program
that if you try to run again immediately after works
perfectly.
Unfortunately, I have noticed that since I have bought a
new PCI graphic card, things have gone downhill. Now
everythime I turn on the computer, for at least 50-70% all
the programs that are set as autoexec shut down for an
error. All the programs of Windows give me continuos
errors (like Explorer needs to be shut more times a day,
IE shuts down or freezes, Avast sometimes says it cannot
work for an error and so does my weather forecast program,
DDhelp goes crazy with some games that I should support
easily). I called the card company and they said that my
computer is compatible. Any1 has any idea why I have these
problems? I would love to avoid to reinstall Windows coz
of the great amount of stuff that I kept updating on my
computer and going back of 5 years would suck bad.

1. / start / settings / control panel / device manager
and look for yellow trouble flags on the graphics card.
(Your post did not say you installed its drivers.)
2. Standard Win98 installations require no AUTOEXEC.BAT
because this is for DOS apps Win98 does not need or use.
Try rebooting without this file (rename it something else.)

3, In your place I would run a reliable Registry repair
tool. I use and recommend Fix-It Utilities (www.v-com.com)
4, For IE, try
/ start / run / MSINFO32.EXE
/ Tools / Repair tool

What are the error messages saying, precisely? If you think it is the
new card...

Troubleshooting Video Problems in Windows
Boot to Safe Mode, open Device Manager, remove all entries in the
"Monitors" branch, & boot back to Normal Mode. Hopefully, it will be
rediscovered & installed. Perhaps, FIRST, note what is installed similar
to below for the adapter.
Then, if still necessary, reinstall your Display Adapter...
......Quote..........
The first thing to do is to remove the video adapter you have
installed. Right-click on the desktop; choose "Properties" from the
drop-down menu; select "Settings;" click on the "Advanced" button; and
click on "Adapter". An adapter is a program that tells Windows how to
deal with a specific video card. Make note of the adapter that is
currently installed. Then, change the adapter to "Standard Display
Adapter (VGA)" and restart the system.
[That is: Click "Change, Next, bolt 'Display a List...', Next, bolt
'Show all hardware', scroll left pane to top, select '(Standard display
types)', select 'Standard Display Adapter (VGA)' in right pane, click
'Next'"... PCR]
This will remove the current adapter and replace it with a generic VGA
adapter that works with all video cards. You will not like VGA because
it supports only 16 colors, but the purpose of installing it is to get
rid of whatever was there before.
Next, return to the adapter screen and install an adapter that matches
your video card. This may or may not be the adapter that you are
using now. Examine the materials you received with your computer to
see if they include a CD-ROM or floppy disk that contains the correct
video adapter. Or go to the Gateway website and see if they have an
adapter for you to download. Or check the website of the company that
made your video card.
