Runtime Error

Jerry Labe - 22 Apr 2004 19:24 GMT I constantly get a message that reads "A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug?" Being a novice, I have no idea how to debug. I did read in a help column in the local paper where the expert wrote "These script-error features can be toggled on and off in the Advanced area of Internet Explorer's Internet Options tool. Click on Tools in the browser menu to reach the Internet Options command, and then open the Advanced tab in the next display. There you will find check boxes to "Disable Script Debugging" and to stop showing every error that crops up. I have done this numerous times and the message stills keeps showing up. Any ideas?

Why have you done this "numerous times"? Are the settings not being retained?
H Leboeuf - 23 Apr 2004 12:43 GMT You may have missed item 5?
Common script errors messages can be eliminated by Clicking: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. 3. In the Internet Options dialog box, click Advanced. 4. Click to select the Disable script debugging check box. 5. Click to clear the Display a notification about every script error check box. 6. Click OK.

However, if script debugging IS installed, which is seems t be in your case, then it does matter whether the box is checked or not.
As you wish to "Disable script debugging", you need to check the box.
Conversely, as you do NOT want notifications, leave unchecked the option titled "Display a notification about every script error"
If you are comfortable editing the Registry, read this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 221438 OFF2000: Files Whose Name Begins with "fff" Appear in Windows Folder http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;221438
If not, run MSCONFIG, click the Startup tab, and uncheck MDM.EXE to prevent it from running, as a workaround until someone can provide you with a REG file which will update your Registry for you.
PCR - 23 Apr 2004 21:06 GMT You must check the first. Only the second must be unchecked. Well, if that doesn't do it, then... What is the precise wording of the error message?
May as well clean up your Startup Group...
First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up. If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say. Only last, go to StartUpCop.

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's StartUpCop has "undo", and it is more than a combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a permanent delete. Of course, first see whether the app has an option in it's own menus to remove itself from the Startup Group. This is configurable, and one may maintain multiple configurations.

H Leboeuf - 24 Apr 2004 13:16 GMT If all fails, then:
Microsoft's Scripting download Get the latest. Two download versions are available for Windows Script 5.6. The first version requires Windows 2000, XP; the second version requires Microsoft Windows 98, Millenium Edition (Me), or NT 4.0. Choose the download appropriate for your operating system. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

Kay - 24 Apr 2004 16:01 GMT Thank you all for your suggestions! I will get back to you on the outcome. The error messages vary depending on which page I am on, but when I want to check my e-mail and I click the hyperlink "E-Mail" on Bellsouth.net HomePage, I get "Runtime Error - Line 7- Object Expected - Do You Want to Debug?".
PCR - 24 Apr 2004 19:57 GMT You are welcome. It always could be the page itself that is causing the error. So, perhaps post a few that do it, & some brave soul may go see. (I, myself, will be out of town.)
