Hi!

Okay, here's the deal - i can't get the computer to start
outside of safe mode, and our modem works from ths USB
port, so I can't get on the internet. Please keep this in
mind before suggesting any quick-fix program.

In bootlog.txt, just about all of my *.ttf's have the
error 0016. How can I fix this? How can I prevent this
from happening again?

Also, I am wondering if this could somehow be related to
using spybot, ad-aware (both are anti-spyware programs, I
trust them with my life), scandisk, or defrag.

Thanks!

Is there a program name mentioned in an error message? If there is a
Details button, click it, & copy/post all you see but register contents.

Boot to Safe Mode, &...

"START, Run, MSConfig" & turn off the Startup Group, Config.sys &
Autoexec.bat. (Note: when you later turn them back on, all items in them
will get checked. So, note what may be unchecked first.)

Can you boot to Normal Mode now? If so, there is some troubleshooting to
do, using MSConfig...

How to Troubleshoot Using the Msconfig Utility with Windows 98
(281965) - This article describes how to use the Microsoft System
Configuration (Msconfig) utility to troubleshoot configuration errors in
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition.

BUT BE CAREFUL-- better not disable System.ini & Win.ini, because that
can be trouble. Well, if you are sure of your Registry backups, actually
those two can be recovered this way...

(a) Boot to DOS. (Hold Ctrl for the Startup Menu, & select "Command
Prompt Only".)
(b) Scanreg  /Restore
(c) Ctrl-Alt Del to Windows.

It will offer five dates. Choose the one of the last successful boot, to
start. These backups are done at boot, not at shut down. This should be
safe to do, if you haven't done anything to files in the mean time. This
will not restore files other than those .ini's & the Registry. It only
restores settings.

You will need to do a logged boot, by turning on the Startup Menu at
"START, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button". Or, hold CTRL as you boot for
the Startup Menu.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q127/9/70.asp Bootlog
failures
......Quote.........................
Font Failures
After you first start Windows, the Bootlog.txt file may list many font
load failures. This behavior is typical. When Font Manager searches the
hard disk for fonts, it may find fonts in several folders. After Font
Manager finds fonts, it records the information so that future attempts
to locate a font proceed more quickly.
......End of quote..............

In light of that, ensure you are looking at the right "Bootlog.txt"
file. A new one is only generated when a new Logged Boot is done. A
backup of the prior one is put into "Bootlog.prv".
