boot error shlddrv.vxd message

My machine had been running it's current configuration (win98se) for several
years without issue until I installed a program downloaded from the web,
which I un-installed using add/remove programs several hours after first
trying it.

Since then (possibly coincidental or more likely related), whenever I reboot
I get a message saying the registry refers to shlddrv.vxd which cannot be
found.  The boot halts until I press a key to continue.

I viewed the registry and found a reference to this file in:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc
Find Spec MRU]

I have no idea where to go from here -

GG mentions it 53 times now, but mostly still in foreign languages.

The registry key you mention merely depicts what you have entered into
"START button, Find", as clicking the down arrow there will show. That
is OK.

If it is nowhere else in the Registry (you did search all the way
through?), then...

"START, Run, MSConfig" & turn off the Startup Group, Config.sys &
Autoexec.bat. (Note: when you later turn them back on, all items in them
will get checked. So, note what may be unchecked first.)

Does it happen now? If not, there is some troubleshooting to do, using
MSConfig...

I did find another entry as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\SHLDDRV]
"StaticVxD"="SHLDDRV.VXD"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\SHLDDRV\Parameters
]
"ProtectFlags"=dword:00000001
"ImagePath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHLDDRV.VXD"

There are no other entries for shlddrv.vxd in the registry.   You are
talking to a registry dummy - so what do you recommend I do next?  I did not
run msconfig since I did find these other entries.

(1) Learn a foreign language, & go read those GG posts.
(2)
 (a) What was the program you uninstalled?
 (b) Did you uninstall it properly, at "Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, Install/Uninstall tab?
 (c) Did it produce any messages during the uninstall?
(3) Consider reinstalling & uninstalling it, as other bits/pieces may
have been left behind.
(4) If you do not wish to do (3), then...

(a) Open the Registry to...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\SHLDDRV

(b) With "SHLDDRV" highlighted in the left pane...
Click "Export Registry File" in the "Registry" menu.

     This will create an "undo" file. It will contain the Key that is
open in the left pane, it's sub-keys & the data in the right pane. It
will get a file type of ".reg". By default, when you click a ".reg"
file, it's data will merge back into the Registry. So, don't do that...
unless you want it back.

    You MAY R-Clk the .reg & select "Edit" to see what is inside.
Perhaps post the contents back to this thread.

(c) R-Clk the key "SHLDDRV" in the left pane, & select "Delete".
     Now, it is gone, unless/until you click that .reg.
(d) Close RegEdit.

That should get both Registry keys you have posted, as one is within the
other.

Thank you so much.  I opted out of learning a foreign language and went
straight to option 4.  Exported the key, then deleted it.  Everyone is now
back the way it was.

You are welcome. Uhuh; after a while, may as well delete that exported
.reg too.
