I recently helped a friend with her new laptop and tried to create some
shortcuts on her desktop but when I right clicked on any of  the programmes
the send to option gave floppy as an option but not desktop.  I got around
it by cutting and pasting shortcut but would be interested to know why this
is?

The other procedure is to select a file in an Explorer Window and
right-click / drag it to the desktop, you will get an option to 'Create
shortcut(s) Here".

The Send To option is controlled by a file in the SendTo folder. The
procedure for re-creating this file if it is missing is described here:

"Desktop As Shortcut" Command Is Missing from the "Send To" Menu
