I updated the driver for my Lucent LT Win Modem. Unfortunately I forgot to
close the Explorer window before installing. The old driver was called a
Lucent Win river & was attached to COM1 port. The new driver is called Agere
Win Modem & is attached to COM3 port. I've now got rid of the Lucent driver
'ghost' & got my internet connevtion working.  Does it matter that the new
driver uses COM3? If so, what do I do? Windows Help says you can change the
port (see extract below) but I can't alter the COM3 text.

1. ...open the Modems Properties dialog box.

2. Click the Properties button.

3. Enter the changes you want:
To change the Port, Speaker volume, or Maximum speed, click the General tab.

COM 3 is a software duplicate of COM1.
This modem should work OK.  If it does not:
1. in / Control Panel / System / Device Manager
remove the modem
2.  Reboot
and follow the prompts to reinstall the modem
on Win98 lines.  If you want to have the modem
on COM1 disallow the Win98 prompts and
add the model via / Add New Hardware.

Thanks Don, By "Win98 prompts" I take it you mean where a dialogue box pops
up telling me Windows is installing the driver. How do I stop this?
