How to make an Update CD?

Thread rating: |
Abraham - 03 Jan 2005 10:23 GMT I am making a Windows 98 Second Edition update CD, It will have on it Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, Windows Media Player 10, Tweak UI 1.33, and the Windows updates. I read somewhere that there are 'corporate' versions of the Windows updates. Is this true? Where are they? Also I read that not all of the updates had been made in the corporate versions. What's the story behind that, and has this issue been resolved?
What tips do you have for me to help me create a completely up-to-date Windows, IE, WMP update CD?
Richard G. Harper - 03 Jan 2005 11:59 GMT First, Windows Media Player 10 will not run on Windows 98.
Second, there is no such thing as a "corporate update" that I know of. There used to be a site where you could download updates other than Windows Updates, and it used to be called the "Corporate Download" page, but it no longer exists as Microsoft now has one download site for all types of downloads.
Third, what you want to do is really not possible. Unlike the NT-based Windows clients and servers where it is possible, the 9x-based systems use a different setup and install methodology. It is possible to script Windows 98 setup to install some additional programs and updates but you cannot update the contents of the CD itself.

He didn't say anything about updating the contents of the official Windows 98 SE CD.
It sound to me like he is simply creating a more up-to-date update CD than the one-time Security Update CD that Microsoft issued Feb 2004.
He will end up with 2 CDs. The official Windows 98 SE CD, and his home grown update CD containing all of the updates available from the Windows Update site plus whatever else he feels like throwing in there.
Dan - 03 Jan 2005 16:26 GMT True, but at best it will contain WMP 9 for a 98SE system. <bg>

That would be almost as bad as Artwilder coming back to haunt us with his meaningless, pointless posts.......

Dan - 03 Jan 2005 19:38 GMT Yeah, we were housemates but he has moved out but we are still friends. Hugh, I am just trying to add some amusement. I will be more focused in the future if you desire. I feel like I need to be the one to lighten the mood sometimes. :>

I'd stick with WMP 6.4 and Winamp and MMJB. (YMMV)

Dan - 04 Jan 2005 06:52 GMT Bill, if you were talking to me thanks -- anyway keep us informed about how your version of IE performs and if your computer gets in trouble. Hugh, by the horror, I was referring to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and the point towards the end of the book when he says the horror, the horror -- I should have known that some people would not catch my drift. Anyway, no hard feelings and keep up the great work Hugh Candlin because you really know computers. I am surprised that you are not an MVP by now.

As already noted, WMP 10 will not work with 98, 6.4 and 9 will work together on the same machine if you wanted to do that though.
There is a Corporate site here http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp
I suspect it's called that because the word corporate has always been in the url, it's had the same look and feel all along, there is a version of it for 95 as well. You are correct, not all the updates for 98 are at the corporate site and never have been, I suspect that they never will have the full array. For the fullest complement of updates you can not beat the Catalog site but note that it too is lacking in a couple areas, like all WMP versions for example, and offline installation packages for DirectX 9.0c. Get those directly from their 'home' sites. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp Only tip I have is to not forget the codecs packages for WMP.
Abraham - 04 Jan 2005 07:33 GMT Only tip I have is to not forget the codecs packages for WMP. Any recommendations of where to go to get these codec packages?

Bill in Co. - 04 Jan 2005 08:01 GMT The MS site used to have some codecs for WMP - I bet it still does. Or at least it had some for the older versions.

gonzojohn - 30 Oct 2006 11:55 GMT What you need to do is research several sites & possibly even consult with some 98SE gurus about which downloads & Plus programs are taboo. Example - most 98SE users would not go near the Backup program that came w/98SE Plus.
I gave up on OE yrs. ago, & can usually find recent versions of Adobe, DirectX, & IE (or Opera, etc.) on aftermarket disks.
MS used to have a way to save downloads to media instead of doing a direct download after each re-boot.
Good luck.
Peace, gj
Gary S. Terhune - 30 Oct 2006 19:22 GMT Who are you replying to, Gonzojohn? Has to be a thread that's at least 30 days old, since yours is the only message I see. When you do that, it makes it difficult on the rest of us, because we can't see the rest of the thread, and it's even worse when you don't quote the previous material.
I seriously don't comprehend your last sentence. You can still download all 98 Updates and save them to whatever media you want to save them to, no reboots involved -- or are you talking about something else?
