Can anyone recommend a freeware, spyware/adware free DVD player that's
compatible with W98SE?

I have a CD ROM/DVD  hardware drive but no DVD playing software.  I can play
DVDs such as MS Encarta 99 --  it's standalone --  but not DVD movies.  I
also have WMP V9 installed but it requires a plug-in (which I could get) and
Windows XP (which I don't have and don't want).

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

WinDVD is excellent but you must buy it.

WinDVD, V6 does look good but the recommended minimum system requirement is
a PIII, 1Gig processor and I'm running a PII, 300 MHz  machine.  Maybe it's
too much to ask of an old machine but it meets my needs so well in all other
aspects.  Is anybody else out there successfully running a DVD player with
such an old processor?  And if so, what player are you using.

Thanks

I am using the DVD player that came with my ATI Radeon 9200 video card.  I
have used PowerDVD in the past and it may be okay but I have not used it for
a while so I cannot suggest getting it.

I think you'll be asking too much of that processor to run a software DVD
decoder.

Good point, Richard.  There may be a good software dvd player that will meet
bobster's needs but his choice is limited unless he upgrades or replaces his
system with new hardware.

Thanks Richard and Dan.  Guess I will give up on the idea of a DVD player
for my old  -- but faithful -- PII 300MHz, 98SE machine.

I  had a DVD player from MSI several years back that worked marginally, but
somehow lost it during the upgrade from W98 to W98SE and it no longer seems
to be available for download.  Anyhoo, we use the TV and a dedicated
hardware player to watch DVD movies so being unable to do so on my computer
is not a big loss.

Thanks again,
bobster

You're welcome!  I found a link for PowerDVD but it requires a P4 with at
least 1 Ghz. and so I guess you are stuck but I am glad you have a way to
watch DVD movies.  Have a great day!

I have an old PowerDVD CD that came with a either a video card or DVD-ROM I
got a few years ago.  System Requirements on the CD say:

Pentium II 350 or better
32 MB RAM (or above)
Windows 95/98/2000/ME
DVD-ROM

Perhaps this might work in your system, it's an older version.  Email me at
my email address (remove the NOSPAM) and I would be happy to send this CD
to you.  I make no guarantees, but it's yours if you want it.  I've never
used it.

My Compaq Presario, 2000, 1 GHz, 256 Mby, has DVDExpress bundled in;
haven't used it much, so no idea how well it holds up.
