Probably not from updating your Java software but from websurfing sites
that made use of java.

I got 'byte verify'-trojan containing *.class files in the past from
surfing around with java turned on. Turned out that the on-access
component of my anti-virus software scanned *.class files but DIDN'T
SCAN *.jar files by default[1]. (Java Class files are often found inside
Java Archive (*.jar) files.) Somehow this made a difference and the
trojan went undetected until i did a full Virus-scan, even though the
trojan *.class files were also present individually in the java cache.

I suggest that whatever Anti-virus software you choose to use in the
future to check that *.jar files are scanned by its on-access component.

If you use M$ Java Virtual Machine (JVM) be sure you have latest/last
version: msJMV 5.00.3810 (ByteVerifier Patched).
Open a DOS-window and enter jview to see version.

What the others said. ;-)

Ref:
[1] I used and still use AntiVir <http://www.free-av.com/>
AntiVir's default settings are now changed so *.jar files are scanned by
the on-access component. I did add that file-type manually for a while.

Tried reinstalling Norton?

Note: I'd prefer to uninstall Norton entirely and use something else,
like AVG or eTrust EZ Antivirus. Consumer versions of Norton products in
the last few years are an abomination, and the latest versions are
*maybe* 1% compatible with Windows 9x systems.

Methinks you may be back asking how the heck to uninstall it.
Personally, I still cant believe one of the Norton Reps doesnt come to this
newsgroup to at least Try and defend the product.
