Windows Explorer settings problem

When I select Folder Options / General / "Custom, based on the settings you
use", and then hit Apply, the selection is accepted, but once you leave the
box, either by closing it or selecting "Settings", it reverts back to the
Classic Style entry just above it. What I'm trying to do is have the right
hand pane of Explorer show the files and folders in Details mode rather than
the Large Icon mode it seems to be stuck in, and IIRC, selecting Custom.../
Settings" and then selecting "Use Windows Classic Desktop" was the way to do
this. At least up to now. (note: selecting Details from the drop down View
menu works for the current session, but the setting won't hold)

What gives?
Lee - 29 Sep 2006 03:40 GMT
Repeat your procedure but this time close the Explorer window with the
little x in the upper right corner while holding down the Ctrl key.
This will save the settings.

But I find that sometimes even the above doesn't work for long, so I
use Find Files for the C:\ drive and look for 'folder.htt'.  I then
highlight them all except for the copy in Windows\Web folder and delete
them.  THAT usually knocks the stuffing out of Web view for a good long
time.

Well I just knocked the stuffing out of Web view for a good long time and
I'm flashing the V sign, but this is Windows so I'm also prepared to retract
it, or change it to one finger, at a moment's notice. I've written down the
time of this nefarious deed just in case there are untoward consequences and
a system revert becomes desirable.

For the record, here's what deleting all but one of the folder.htt's did and
didn't do:
DIDN'T allow the "Custom, based on the settings you use" box to remain
checked under Folder Options/General.
DID alllow you to change the dropdown menu View selection from Large Icons
to Details and have that change hold, including after a reboot.

Actually I run a vintage WIN98-era edition of PowerDesk, which is not
without a few minor quirks but basically has never given me any trouble at
all. But there are a few times when you need Explorer, so this is a nice
problem to get out of the way (until it makes a comeback, of course).

Thanks very much.

After setting "View" to "Details" in Explorer go to "Folder Options"
but the "View" tab rather than "General" (do so while Explorer is
open).  Now punch the "Like Current Folder" button.

At the moment, thanks to Lee's suggestions, Explorer is functioning as it
should, so there is no problem to correct and thus no way to test it. But,
perhaps against all logic, I went ahead and did it anyway, since you rarely
to never provide errant advice. As far as I can tell this produced no
change, which is good, since things are OK to begin with. FWIW there is
still no way to hold a checkmark for "Custom, based on the settings you use"
but, hey, who cares.

Did you actually make/change some settings for "Custom"?  Just
checking "Custom" doesn't do squat.

The usual approach is to:
 - get everything the way you like it
 - select the View you want to use (important!)
 - toggle some setting so that Apply is un-grey'd
 - Apply, then Apply to all folders, OK

But you can expect dangerous slippage in Win98, which will often fall
back to "View As Web Page" and big dummy icons.

Other slippage that may apply to a wider range of Windows versions:
 - Safe Mode always duhfaults to dangerous settings (hide .ext etc.)
 - after a Safe Mode session, "Show full path in title bar" is lost
 - create a new user account, expect unsafe MS defaults again

I think Microsoft should have done with PowerDesk what the behomeths usually
do when their applications are bested by upstarts - bought them out and
stuck their name on it.

Or, in the case of some app.s, buy it up and then just suppress it
altogether.

(FWIW, I use the '95 shell - i. e. "SLEEK" via 98lite; the only thing I
actually miss from the '98 shell is the multiple-file-copy progress bar. But
I once mentioned sleek here before, and it seemed to trigger outrage, though
the reasons therefor were not clear at the time. Certainly, I rarely -
though not never - seem to get irritating settings changes, and I certainly
don't get the view-as-web [since it's not available].)
