Hello
I have urgent problem to solve.

I have Widows 98 and LIte on dvd recorder.
It was working for a long time without any problems , but since last week I
can't record any dvd.

I can read them without any problems. Liteon is ok - on my other PC it's
working with Windows XP.
And I have another Liteon DVD - same thing - it's working but I can't write
any cd on this Win 98 PC.
In Nero and other software for recording i have massage that there is no
rocorder in system.

I can't reinstall this Windows 98. (it's the last thing I want to do becouse
of software that is already installed)

I can see liteon in hardware tab - it has normal icon.
I have installed two different aspi drivers.

What can I do ?
Please help :)

Try cleaning the DVD drive using a cleaning disc made for this purpose.

Nope. Lite on is working. I have tested it in another PC.
It's working.

So cleaning is not nessesary.

Just an idea. Delete all the aspi drivers that are on your
computer.
Go to www.goldenhawk.com and DL the trial version (only runs at
1x but does everything), and it's only about a megabyte.

Reboot. Install the goldenhawk software (CDRWin - NOT the German
one with the same name). Let it install its own aspi drivers (it
will ask you).

See what happens. May be worth a try.

(IMO Nero is garbage. In fact, you could try to uninstall it
first, except it's almost impossible, it puts so much crap in
the registry. But at least find all the aspi drivers and delete
them manually.)

Also, what happens when you go to control panel-system and look
at the LiteOn drive? Does it say "device working OK"?

If you're certain that the drives are clean, try cleaning the disks with an
old "Discwasher"-style cleaner for LP's (any dilute alcohol & soft rag will
work.

It could be something as simple as an aeroport or aeroplane GSSR (subsurface
radar), etc.

I don't much care to reboot my system, but Win98SE only takes approx. 15
minutes, plus any compressed programs, favourites, & documents, & including
downloadable programs, shouldn't take more than 3 to 4 hrs. tops. I'm in the
same quandary because I surrendered my failing dexterity to a computer
builder who  apparently loaded a faulty Win98SE copy. I'm tryig to figure out
how to add the.dll file without rebooting right now. It's almost a given that
Win98SE will need to be rebooted at least once a year anyway.

I have a Lite-ON CD-RW & was considering another one w/CD-RW,DVD
player/burner. Thanks for the heads up.

Good Luck,

peace,
gj

NOT recommended. The info is about a mm behind the shiny bottom
surface of the disc, embedded in what is commonly perceived as
the "cover side" and unless the disc is seriously scratched, the
laser ignores the minor surface aberrations. You should never
use ANY commercial cleaners on either side of a cd/dvd disc.
Breathe on it for a few moments and then using a Webril wipe or
a VERY soft cotton cloth, wipe it in a star pattern OUTWARDS
from the center, never circular.

Huh?

They are the biggest scam there is, except for the "anti-glare"
screens.

Good advice, but I'm wondering if you'd agree with advice I pass on from
time to time that for seriously scratched CDs, you can use a car wax to
smooth them up (the "bottom side" of course.)  Wax fills the abrasions. Seen
it recommended several times and I've even used it a couple times. Any
drawbacks? (Of course, with seriously scratched CDs, the first thing to do
when you can manage to get it to read is to make a copy.)

It makes sense in the way that those TV ads for "miracle wax"
that fills in minor car paint scratches etc. is supposed to
work. I would imagine it would work much better with TINY
scratches in a plastic disc. And you can always wash it off if
it doesn't help or makes it worse.

Personally speaking, I have successfully managed to only handle
CD's by their edges for many years now, and only dropped about 4
ever, with no visible damage. I have seen friends' discs which
should NOT play, but do. Who the hell knows anymore.

FWIW, I've managed to read every single byte off an AOL data CD after
severely gouging it along several radii with a screwdriver.

As for cleaning/repair recommendations, here are some links to the

Guys , as I said this dvd was tested in another PC. It was working fine. So
it does not need cleaning.

Gonzojohn must be some king of airman, like Terhune & Badour— & flying
upside down or sideways! I'm surprised Terhune didn't explain it!

OEM versions of Nero often only work with the drive they are bundled
with.
