I am trying to fix a very old Gateway with OS windows 98, It keep saying I
have to enter a command.  I have not disks on this computer at all and I do
not have any papers/books on it either.

What do you see, and what, exactly, is the message? Are you simply seeing a
command prompt C:\?

1st it was just saying it would need the interperter command and all that was
after that was the capital letter A.

Now it is saying operating sytem not found!

I can not even get to windows screen, I can not get any where....very
frustrating!

I did go and download the win 98 boot disk off my lap top which only burns
CD's and tried to get it going but that did not work. Does it have to be a
floopy and not a cd?

I am ready to throw the computer out the window myself, countless hours to
accomplish NOTHING!

HELP

Nothing can be properly done until you have a boot disk. Yes, you can use a
bootable CD version. But it's a process that's a bit involved. You can't get
access to a working machine that has a floppy drive?

Yes, you do need a boot floppy.
You can download a file from www.bootdisk.com that will make a boot floppy.
But you will need a computer with a floppy disk to make the boot floppy.
Most likely you will also need a Windows 98 CD for the operating system and a copy of all the
hardware drivers for that computer.
You can get the hardware drivers free off the Gateway web sites, but you have to buy a copy of the
Windows CD, most likely from someone on Ebay.
Make sure you get a legitimate copy of Windows 98SE with the key code when you buy off ebay.

Command interpreter of Win99  -- COMMAND.COM

Go to;  Start --> run

enter;   command.com

Now hit the Enter key.

You are now in a Command Prompt where you can run DOS and Win32 command line utilities.

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows 98
boot floppy.  Use it to start the problem computer, type
"copy  a:\command.com  c:\"
and press "Enter".  Then remove the floppy and restart.
