I have a 2GB USB drive but it says that it's not win 98 compatible.
There is no CD/DVD burner on the win 98 machine.
Any suggestions?

Get yourself a personal website, upload them to the site and download them
to the new machine.

Thanks Gary!
Are there any personal websites out there that allow for multiple
pictures (or folders) to be uploaded.  piczo and live spaces both allow
only individual pictures to be uploaded one by one.

Hmmm... To be honest, I don't know. I own my own site, <s>.

Often, your ISP will include some personal space, even allow FTP transfers.
What ISP are you using? Really, anywhere that allows you to set up your own
site will often include FTP transfer capabilities. At least, it *used_to_be*
that way. As noted, I haven't had much need for them in recent years.

If you run too many walls and/or don't get useful suggestions here, I'll
loan you some space on my site for a short time. Just email me (and notify
me here if you do, so I can look for it amongst all the SPAM, <s>.) I use a
real email for posting here and even read anything that isn't SPAM.

Thanks Gary.  I might take you up on that.  I'm going to try using the
win 98 driver I found on the Kingston website...that *should* work (I
hope)

You might look here:
http://www.free-webhosts.com/

Look halfway down the page for the start of the listings. I see at least a
few that meet your needs.

What brand is it Lisa?

I ask because let's say for instance that it's a Sandisk which is the most
common brand, and going to their website
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(1064)-SanDisk_Cruzer_Mini_USB_Flash_Driv
e.aspx

..you can see all that they have, and yes by clicking on the More Info tab
in any of them, it does only say that it supports Windows 2000, ME, XP
...however that's not the whole story since it does support W98 as you can
see they offer a separate drivers download for it there too:
http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1093

Also many times you can use generic W98 drivers for other brands of usb
drives and they will work, but we would need to know which brand and model
number you have to research it online ...or you could :)

If by some chance yours truly is not able to be drivered, then an
alternative is to use one of your friends usb stick that does support W98

A more cumbersome alternative is to upload you files to many of the free
sites that host files (or even your own website if you are willing to learn
and maintain one) ..and upload it or send it to yourself, and then
download it on the machine of your choice, but of course it's all limited
by what you have for an  Internet connection because if you have only 56k
dialup then forget it as it would take forever, but if you have cable then
depending on your tier of bandwidth relates to how fast you can do
this.  Anyway, if you don't want to get your own website then here's a link
for a free service that's very very very simple to send large files to
other people (or even yourself) is this one:  http://www.dropload.com/
..there are many different sites, but this particular one is a very good
one to use, for Free even!  ..and I have occasionally used it before
myself.

Also beside these mini usb flash drives and pens etc, there are plenty of
usb 'portable hard drives' that do support Win9x and so here again if one
of your friends has one, or you can even buy a 40 GB one these days for a
$29 sale - and it's not lost on using it just for Win9x and your pictures
this one time, but going forward then using it on yours or your friends W2K
or WXP machine to transfer files whenever, gives you that forever
convenience,

....in other words, if there is a will there is a way to do it.... heck,
funning a bit is that you can always use a 1.44 MB floppy drive and make
1000 separate transfers in a split file scenario ...ridiculously
prohibitively time consuming yes, but nevertheless is possible.

The drive is a Kingston...I found a win 98 driver on their website.
I'll try that.

Thanks!!

Great then, and your welcome.
This is the easiest way out for you, however all are good suggestions.
It may make a difference if you have W98 or W98SE?
Sometimes it will work for W98FE and sometimes not.
You didn't say which model your flash drive was  either, but is this where
you went then:
http://www.kingston.com/support/downloads/usbdatatrav/default.asp
..be sure to get the right one

If you have W98FE (first edition) and not SE (second edition) for your OS,
and then and if it doesn't work?  ..there may be away around it to get it
to work for FE..

Can you network the two machines together.  If so, you could
either copy, reasonably fast, or just leave the photos on the
old machine and share them with the new machine.

Get a new free YAHOO email address.

Set the XP machine email account up
to receive email using that address.

Use your current email account to email the photos
to your new YAHOO email address.

Then read the emails on the XP machine
using the YAHOO account and save the attachments.

OR

Remove the hard drive from the 98 machine,
and install it temporarily as a slave on the XP machine.

Then transfer stuff until your heart is content......

OR

IF - BIG IF - the burner software is 98-compatible,
borrow the burner from the XP machine,
install it on the 98 machine, and let it rip.......

OR

Do what Gary said.  It's a good idea.

Perhaps using

If you have both machines at the same time, network them.

If the 98 machine is being replaced by (or upgraded to) the XP machine, then beg
or borrow someone's laptop and network transfer 98->laptop and then laptop->XP

Surely you have friends.

Expensive best way:
PCI ide card and hard drive connected to it, in win98 machine.  Copy files
to that hard drive.  Move ide card and connected hard drive to new machine.
You need an open PCI slot in both machines, and place to mount the hard
drive in both machines, and possibly a pigtail for power.

Less expensive best way:
Lan connect both PCs.  Share the hard drive of the 98 machine with the new
machine.  Copy files to new machine.

Alternative way:
Update to 98SE, then use a USB thumb/flash drive that supports 98SE.  I use
a Sandisk version.

Or (temporarily) take the hard drive out of the old machine and connect it
into the new one (moving links if necessary, and - just possibly -
disconnecting the new machine's CD/DVD/whatever drive, though I doubt that
would be necessary). Copy (or move!) files from old HD (which will appear as
just another drive letter, probably D:) to new machine's HD, then put
everything back as it was.

Needs LAN connection in old machine though - if it doesn't have a burner, it
may well not have a LAN connection. (Or is that why you said _less_
expensive: OK, LAN cards are dirt cheap, but if you're opening it up anyway
to put a card in, you might as well just borrow the hard drive.)
