I wish to extract MS DOS from the Windows 98SE install cd and install
just MS DOS on a pc. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks very much...

You shouldn't be attempting this unless your Windows 98SE license is
based on a full retail operating system license (Retail windows 98 or
Windows 98 Upgrade with full retail earlier qualifying OS). You are
obliged to remove Windows 98SE and any qualifying OSs from any computers
you had that particular product key installed on earlier. An upgrade
license does NOT permit simultaneous installations of the upgrade OS and
the qualifying OS on two separate computers.

You might have to boot the computer with a floppy to partition and
format the hard drive (FAT partition, no FAT32 or NTFS). You would need
to use the /s flag to install the system files during the formating
process. If you don't have a boot floppy you might be able to find one
at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm . You could then copy the rest
of the DOS files from the CD with the XCOPY command. If the XCOPY file
isn't in a location included in you path variable you will need to type
the full path where it is located.

Hmm...  What if I have a dual boot system with XP on it, as well as 98/98SE?
Or, with just 98/98SE installed, I simply choose to update the time manually
in 98/98SE on the 2 days, March 11 and November 4, in the year?  And, if I
fail to do so, will this prevent me from updating my bedroom alarm clock
(what I rely on to wake me).  Nevermind all the other clocks most household
have...

First of all, are you now naked, as instructed?

Second, the change should be made for all Windows installations you have,
and there will soon be any number of free utilities offered to make not only
the change for your timezone, but all the other timezone updates that MS is
including in the Update for later versions of Windows. My own offering is
waiting for MS to release the final version of the XP patch in January, so
that I'm sure I have all of them.

As for the rest of your clocks... Try removing your clothes and see if the
answer doesn't then occur to you, <g>.

Just Fdisk and Format as usual and then Copy the DOS files from the
Oldmsdos directory of your Win98 CD.

Add an appropriate Path command to your autoexec.bat, eg ...

PATH=C:\DOS98SE;C:\DOS98SE\COMMAND

Not directly.  Use a 98SE boot diskette with sys.com on it.  Sys the C:
drive.   Then, do as Frank says for copying and path statement.  He's
assuming you're copying those files to the directory noted in the path
statement.
Simply copying will not result in booting.
