I've just upgraded to XP.  As I'm finding it impossible to get drivers for
my scanner I wonder if I can go back to 98SE.

If I install it from the original disk will I be able to get the MS Updates
up to the point where MS stopped supporting this OS?

Thank you

What's the manufacturer/make/model of the scanner?

Epson Perfection 1200Photo (same as 1200U or 1200S).

There is a driver in their page but it does not work with XP SP2, and I've
surfed the Net without much joy.

Thanks for your help

I don't use the Epson scanning software. I just use the Twain with my Graphics programs for
scanning.

Nope, I didn't!  It wouldn't work for my Microtek scanner. [|8o)

Yes, I did

And I got the dreaded blue screen when I booted up telling me to uninstall
any recently installed drivers/programmes.

I'm also unsure of exactly what I need as the original Epsom CD is not
accepted by XP.

Apart from the physical scanner and a driver (if I can find it) what other
software do I need to get the scanner going?

Thank you

Well, you might have to do as I did [when testing XP], search the NET for a
modified driver, or one which DOES work, though not necessarily designed to
work in XP. UMAX wanted more money for a supported port to XP, yet other
users discovered that certain UMAX drivers and progs either worked, or could
be slightly modified to work.

If this is the route you follow, try to find the supposed "fix" on more
than a single site, and on those which have tested and described the
results, or it may cause real problems.

Did you try any of the files I supplied a link to?

Also from what I find at Epsons support site, only the Twain drivers are XP
compatible.

or if the link wraps/breaks:  http://snipurl.com/167fl

They also have conflicting documents on the proper installation procedure.  Some
docs mention not to have the scanner connected while installing the drivers and
others mention to have it connected.

I'm still trying to get all the information before committing myself.

But do I need any other programme other than the Twain driver?  I expect I
will need another programme but I no longer have access at the CD which
apparently cannot be read by XP.

You shouldn't need any other programs but you should complete the below before
installing the drivers.

Boot to Safe Mode > Device Manger, uninstall/remove any/all scanner devices listed
and close out back to the desktop.
Open Explorer and expand the tree to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name folder\Local Settings\Temp
Delete all the contents of the Temp folder.

 Expand to C:\Windows\Prefetch
Delete all the contents of the Prefetch folder.

 Expand to C:Windows\Temp
Delete all the contents of the Temp folder.

Close out back to the desktop.
Right click the IE icon on the desktop. (If you use IE)
Click Properties in the popup menu.
Under the General tab click the Delete Cookies button.
Click the Delete Files button, put a check in "Delete all offline content".
Click Ok and Ok when finished.
Reboot and Install the scanner drivers.

You're quite welcome, glad to help.

Have yourself a Happy New Year.  Enjoy it safely and sensibly, there will be
checkpoints where you can get a set of locking bracelets for free, after that it's
all out of pocket.

To go back to win98
you need to backup your data...
erase the drive and reinstall win98

I think I'd just get a new scanner...

otherwise...create two partitions

install win98 on one
and XP on the other and dual boot
Qimi - 29 Dec 2006 14:57 GMT
But will I be able to get the Windows Update downloads up to the point where
MS stopped supporting 98SE?

Thanks

For now, yes. They are all still available.

An alternative is the UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack
2.1a at:

dan - 29 Dec 2006 16:23 GMT
Has anybody used this "Unofficial" service pack 2.1a  ?

Good, bad, etc.....

Microsoft still has the win98 updates...
