1.  MSGSRV32 not responding is no help.  This is
the error message display module, called when
another app makes an error --- NBG when MSGSRV
malfunctions so you do not see the message.

We may need also to know:
2.  Did the PC run perfectly with another modem?
If it ever ran perfectly, what changes did you make
since then?
3.  What comm software do you use (e.g. Internet
Explorer and Outlook Express?)
4.  How do you connect?  Telephone or broadband
or wireless?

Basic suggestions:
5.  Regular housekeeping (remove junk files,
SCANDISK and occasional DEFRAG) to be
sure hard drive is OK and not crowded.
6.  Check on a regular schedule for viruses,
intruders, malware.
7.  Simplify:  e.g. do not load at reboot anything
you do not really need (or could load fast via
hotkey when you want it.)
8.  If the modem is new, you may not have
installed the driver for Win98.  (This is a Win98
newsgroup.  Later OSs differ somewhat.)  If there
is a Win98 driver, you ought to be able to
download it from the maker's web site.

The simplest way to instal a modem driver is:
(a)  Write down the filepath to the driver (perhaps
C:\Windows\Desktop)
(b)  / start / settings / control panel / system / device manager
Select the modem and REMOVE it.  Then reboot
(c)  The PC will report a "new" modem and prompt
you to instal it.   Point the software to the (filepath
for the) correct driver.  Have the Win98 CD ready
in case it is asked for, but make sure the process
uses the driver you downloaded (in case there is
one on the CD but outdated.)

Then post results here.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. Hope my answers to your questions are ok.

2. PC ran reasonably well with the exception of two occurring faults.
Freezing on shutdown and blue screen, words like invalid page fault, stack
dump, and a load of numbers after this. This was when I was using an internal
dial up, pay as you go modem. In the last month I have installed an external
ADSL broadband modem. This item came with a cd with its own software and
drivers.

3. You guessed right- Microsoft outlook in conjunction with a program called
mail washer and internet explorer.

4. Broadband

5. Scandisk run regularly and I even think I defrag twice a week on average.

6. I run spyware blaster, AVG, Adaware , all free issue, but keep up to date
with updates and activate these on regular basis.

7. With regard to having programs running on boot up, I pressed ctrl+alt+del
and I have 7 programs in the startup menu. I think this is ok isn’t it?

8. explained in answer 2.

These answers I have written, I have had to type in Microsoft word and copy
into the reply section because blue screen kept appearing when I enlarged the
screen, moved the text. The blue screen read a fatal exception OE has
occurred at 016F: BFF 9D FFF. Two boxes appear ignore or close. When I click
close another box appears informing me IEXPLORE caused a general protection
fault in module MMSTSTEM.DLL.0004:00000 with the alternate endings dbc or dc5
or dcdor 441c and somewhere I recall mmtask.

Thanks for your time,

I hope this helps,

Lyndsay
