girlfriends pc hard drive went belly up so I'm adding a new 160G drive. I
tried loading Win XP Pro which was legal company licenced copy. But that disk
won't boot up and allow me to install. I have a utility disk I can boot from
and get dos prompt but the XP Pro disk still won't run setup saying can't run
it from dos.

So, I was gonna try and load Win 98 on the new drive just so I could then
upgrade to WIn XP but after install I get Windows Protection error and have
tried all sorts of msconfig suggestions from MS support pages but can't get
past this.

I've tried reformatting the drive and starting install all over again but no
luck...
any suggestions?

1. You can only clean-install XP from a CD boot. No other way to do it that
I know of.

2. You can only upgrade from 98 to XP with a "Full Retail" or "Upgrade"
version, not the most common OEM version.

3. Have you investigated why the CDROM won't boot? Is the boot order correct
in BIOS? If the CD drive is a slave to the HD, is the HD properly jumpered?
Can you make it boot any other kind of bootable CDROM?

Hi Gary,

Her PC (an Emachine that used to have XP on it's one now not working drive)
has a cd-rom and a DVD rom drive on one ide bus. On the other ide bus is the
new 160G drive I'm trying to add to her system as it's new main hard drive.

I have a utility cd that will boot from both the dvd or cd rom. After
booting from that utility cd I have access to both drives and can put the XP
Pro cd in and read it but the setup.exe on it won't run from a command line.
But it won't boot from either drive either!!

I shouldn't have to fool with installing 98 - I was just doing that figuring
I could get it installed easier then move up to XP.....  Not sure why that XP
disk won't boot.

You recommending I just pass on 98 - probably reformatting the drive to wipe
all 98 info off and somehow figure out how to get the XP disk to boot and
install....

Of course, there's no floppy in this system and USB ports won't work without
windows so trying to add some cd-rom drivers first... seems to also be a
problem...  Unless I figure out which to use and burn them onto a cd....

once again grrrr.

I feel your pain. The whole "must boot to CD to install" paradigm that XP
and now Vista use is a real PITA. I *believe* there are ways around it, but
I'm not certain. The place to ask is in XP newsgroup(s).

I assume that you already know that when the XP CD boots, you get a prompt
to "Press any key to boot from CD", and if you don't do that within
something like 5 seconds, it skips booting and proceeds to the next boot
device. Perhaps you could try repeatedly pressing the <enter> key while the
system is booting and see if that catches it. (Don't hold down the key, as
that will result in a "stuck key" error.)

I haven't worked with an eMachine in a long time. Is the XP CD a standard
OEM distro, or does is it perhaps a "restore" CD that requires come other
method? Also, can you get your hands on another XP CD (standard OEM edition)
to try?

Lastly, I would consider making a copy of the CD using another machine (or a
98 installation on this machine, if necessary). Straight Disk Copy is
required, can't copy contents to HD and then to new CD. Might also try
cleaning the CD using dilute dish soap solution, rinsing and drying, and
then polishing it with a standard liquid car wax, always wiping from center
to edge. That will fill any scratches on the underside that might be
blocking proper reading, though it's scratches to the label side that cause
irrevocable loss of data.

See if the procedure described below, substituting the unavailable
boot-floppy for the Utility-CD, is something you want to try. But it is
suspect that you can't boot from the WinXP CD, when you can boot from
other bootable media in the drives.

I've been installing XP from DOS mode diskette boot with CD-ROM driver
support, just as the poster describes.  Here's the logic...

H:\i386\WinNT.exe  /u:C:\CQSetup.txt  /s:H:\i386

...where H: is the CD drive, and C:\CQSetup.txt is the answer file.  I
don't think you need to use an answer file for this to work; the trick
is most likely to be using the right executable to start the
installation, e.g. WINNT.EXE and not WINNT32.EXE

the first place. (P.S. I haven't used this procedure myself.)

Hmmm... I'll have to try that when I'm not so burned out. My insomnia is
getting really bad. You'd think that with all this time on my hands, I'd be
able to get more done, but I'm exhausted.

Dunno if you have you seen 'Into the Night' (1985), Dir. by John Landis,
<http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0089346/>.
It's been a long time since i've watched it, but your post made me think
of it and made me want to see it again.

I'm certain I've seen it, but with my amnesia, I don't recall anything more
than that. Guess I'll put it on my Blockbuster list.

Booting with the utility disk that got me CD-rom access and then using the
i386/winnt command got the Win XP install going!!!!

Many Thanks.....

but why would MS bury that like that?

Good to hear that you could progress that route.

No idea, but at least it is there.

<snip>

The best way to install XP is by booting with the CD of course.
Since for whatever reason the cd won't boot...
the next best alternative is to go to the Microsoft website and download
a set of XP_install boot floppies.
that should do the trick.

BTW: Another respondent mentioned the use of a standard win9x boot floppy.

That will work but running   winnt from the i386 folder...

but 1)  you need to first load smartdrv
and 2) the HD must have a fat32 partition...

so you are better off with the Microsoft boot floppies

"1. You can only clean-install XP from a CD boot. No other way to do it that

To save wear and tear on my CD, I copied all the files from that disk to a
folder on a second partition (FAT32). I boot up using a Windows 98 boot
floppy, and then point to (in my case) e:\winxp\i386\winnt.exe to begin the
installation. So, you can clean-install XP without a CD boot.

Try downloading the actual installation disks for XP from bootdisk.com, or
Microsoft. It will be a six disk set.
Use those preferably.
Beyond that the command line would be [for regular DOS]:

winnt /s:[your cdrom drive]:\I386 - to negate the potential loss of the
install source directory during installation, and using the DOS XP installer
command. There are other command line options you can add should you have
specific issues during setup.
