The following message appears when I am trying to start-up my laptop:
"Your program caused a Divide Overload Failure/Error.  If the problem
persists, contact your program vendor."
HELP!  What do I do?

Is "overload" actually "overflow"?

This is probably caused by malware or a virus--do you regularly run spyware
and virus scans with up to date programs?  If not, do so and **reboot** the
system after doing the scans.  Then run the scans again to see if you got
everything.

I suspect that if you boot in safe mode, you will not get the error message.
If so, something that starts at boot is probably causing the problem.  Use
this procedure to identify the culprit:

It definitely says "Divide Overload Failure/Error".  This laptop was working
while we had it in Hawaii for two months, and when we got home this is the
notice that comes up when I try to start.

Thank you, Ron.  I went into the Start-up in the Safe Mode and finally
brought up Windows 98.  Still successful after shutting off, and restarting.
My computer tech knowledge is severely limited so I appreciate your advice.

Char,

Since the PC booted in safe mode, that means that something that is starting
at boot in normal mode is keeping the PC from booting.  That most likely
will be malware and/or virus.  So, do you regularly run full scans of your
hard drive with up to date spyware and anti virus programs?  They can be
installed and run in safe mode and hopefully they will cure the problem.

PCR,

Add firewall blocking to Divide By Zero errors.  I have an app that will get a
Divide By Zero error when attempting to update it if the firewall is Enabled.

Do you have an MS article number for that?

Scratch it off, it has to do with network setting configuration and firewall
permissions mainly with servers.

OK. I'll keep it in mind, though, to mention it if all else fails (as
sometimes can happen).
