HELP!
My computer started to act wierd, and it was my operating system, Windows
98. I had a Rescue CD, and it worked, but I clicked the wrong thing. I did
"Restore Files" instead of "Rebuild Computer". I clicked "Rebuild Computer".
The disc started to format, then the disc had a error, and now is can't boot!
The CD won't start eather. I got a old copy of Windows 3.1, and my computer
is designed for windows 3.1, and 95. I got windows 98 Upgrade, and it worked.
I downloaded somthing of the internet, and it messed up my C:, Back to 3.1. I
started the setup, and i hade to choose a destination. I did the defult,
C:/WINDOWS. I contenued, and i got a error that there is no such thing as
dirve C:. If anyone knows how to install 3.1 on my computer, Please tell me
so i can put 95 back on it, then upgrade to 98. Thakes!

Perhaps your computer started to act weird because it had a disk error. Time
to replace that hard drive, perhaps? Determine make & model drive, then get
diagnostics (floppy boot) to run on the drive.

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a DOS 6.22 boot
disk. Use it to start the computer in question, run "fdisk" and try to create
a 2 gigabyte partition. You may have to delete an existing partition to do
this. After the new partition is created, run fdisk again, select option 2 and
activate the partition. Then use format.com to format the new partition by
typing "format /s" followed by the drive letter assigned to the new partition.
Then run Windows 3.1 setup.

There is no need to install the old systems--you can do a clean install with
the W98 upgrade disk. During the installation, it will ask to see a
qualifying disk--show it your W95 CD.
It is not clear to me if you have files on the hard drive that you need. If
not, just format the drive and then install the system. For information on
installing W98, go to: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html
If you have data that you need to save or you have further problems, post
back to this thread.

Again, your hard drive is probably bad. Get the manufacturer's diagnostics
program (one that you run from a floppy boot) to test the hard drive.

Agree with Gary. Go to the drive maker's web site and download their
diagnostic software. It installs to a floppy disk that can then be used to
check the health of your hard drive.
Also, there is no need to install W95 first and then upgrade. Once you get
the drive issue sorted out, format the drive (or if a new drive, fdisk and
format) and install W98 from the upgrade CD. When asked during
installation, show it your W95 CD.
