I have a older toshiba 700mhz laptop with ME.

I tried to run windows update on it. The first time, i selected all
update. It got almost to the end of install, then hung.

The second time, i left out the IE update. did 12G or so download,
then proceeded to install the files. It got to the end of the install
dashboard and said it was 100%, but it would not close.

Now, i start the machine and it boots. I can go to windows update in IE,
but its says windows update is only for windows machines. So update
thinks ME is not a windows machine any more. It did go to update and
show the updates before the update screen hung.

How can i fix this?

You really should post this to a Windows ME group. This is a Windows 98
group. There are differences sufficient to cause advice you receive here to
be wrong.

Agree with Gary; however, for some background that may be relevant, look at
the 30 Mar post in this newsgroup entitled, Say what?
