I just did a clean install of Windows 98 SE on someone's Compaq. I
installed IE 6 and then went after the updates. I think there was 17. They
installed, I rebooted, and then decided to go back and make sure that was
all and also to get DirectX 9. I was greeted with this!
"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

How do I convince the update site that this machine isn't a Mac?

Just keep trying, Menno. Make sure to close all instances of IE before each
attempt. Doing that, I usually succeed with less than five tries. It's a
known problem on the server end that MS is aware of, though who knows if
they'll bother to do anything about it.

After several tries, I rebooted and tried again... and it worked.
Oh well. It was interesting at least. In all my years of installing and
updating Windows 98 machines, I've never seen THAT one before... :-)
