I'm having problems reinstalling win98. I have the files on
my hard drive, so I run the setup.exe file from there. I go
through all the usual steps, right up to the first Restart.
After the restart, I get the usual messages of "Please wait
while Setup updates your configuration files." Then I get
"Continuing to load windows" message. Then I get a Blue
Screen that says Registry Checker on it and under that it says:
"You have restored a good registry. Windows found an error
in your system files and restored a recent backup of the
files to fix the problem. Press Enter to restart your computer."
Now, I'm back to a reboot and to Starting Win98. Now, I'm
in windows and I get a popup of System File Error that says:
"The following system files have been replaced with an older
version by a program you recently ran. These files are
currently in use and cannot be automatically repaired.
Windows may not run correctly until you exit and restart
Windows so that these files can be automatically repaired."
And the file its pointing to is c:\windows\system\shell.dll
So, I OK that and nothing further happens. I have to
ctrl+alt+del to reboot. After that I'm right back into
windows; but nothing has been updated.
I've run the System File Checker and it keeps coming up with
one problem file -- user.exe. I've tried to repair the file
and reinstall windows, and I'm back to square one. Then I
tried to update the file, reinstall windows, and again, I'm
back to square one.
I've tried repairing Internet Explorer and that doesn't help.
I've tried running the setup.exe file from within windows,
exiting to DOS and still nothing. I've also tried running
from the CD from within window and from DOS and still I
can't reinstall.
I've also tried removing shell.dll and shell32.dll from DOS
and reinstall from there. Still cannot reinstall windows.
Any one with some suggestions on how to over come this problem?
Thanks
Andreas

Thanks, but when I tried to reinstall, I kept getting the MS
Registry Checker popup, saying it was repairing system.dat.
From there, it would stall. I kept rebooting and kept
getting that popup. I got so fustrated that I reformated
and reinstalled.

It sounds like you are attempting to install over the existing system. If
so, I have found that it rarely fixes anything and usually causes more
problems than it solves. You may want to consider installing to a new
folder or formatting the drive (after backing up needed data) and installing
clean.
I have had a couple experiences where I installed clean and received the
same registry notice as you. In both cases, one of the sticks of ram had
failed.

Make sure the source files are on a different partition than C.
Format C and proceed with the install.
(Partitions are good for you. Create a few more while you're at
it.)
