I have old file names and icons in the reycyle bin that cannot be deleted
form appearing in the bin. Files were deleted from "My Documents," but the
recycle bin was not emptied. Windows 98 was reinstalled, and this problem
resulted. I'd appreciate any advice on removing the file names.

I followed the instructions for (file system error 1026), with no results.

Thanks.

To clear Recycled Bin just DELTREE each
/Recycled folder iii each logical drive.
You will probably need to do so in DOS.
On reboot, Windows will assign a new (empty)
/Recycled folder to each drive.

Thanks, Don. I'm not clear on how to do what you instructed. At the "C"
prompt, I should type:

DELTREE /recycled folder iii

and hit "enter"?  I'm not doing something correctly.

Please clarify. And thanks, again.

Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode (Start> Shutdown> Restart in MS-DOS Mode).

At the resulting DOS prompt, type the following, and press Enter after each line:

CD\
attrib -s -h recycled
deltree /y recycled

When the process is completed, you will be returned to the flashing cursor at the
DOS prompt.

Type EXIT and press Enter, to restart Windows.

I appreciate the advice, but the icons and names of non-existent files remain
in my recycle bin. Can I delete the recycle bin, and reinstall it? Or
reinstall Windows? Anyone encounter this before and used a different method
to clear the recycle bin of old information? Thanks.

1. Start > Shutdown > Restart in MS-DOS mode.
2. At the prompt, type the following command:

DELTREE /y C:\RECYCLED

Then press <Enter>.

3. If you have more than one HD partition (D:\, E:\, etc.) -- NOT talking
about CD/DVD drives -- repeat the command for each, changing the appropriate
letter in the command.

4. Type EXIT, then <Enter>, to return to Windows.

5. If you have Norton programs installed and right-clicking the RB shows an
entry for "Protected Recycle Bin" or similar, then all bets are off. You
first need to deal with Norton and I hate them so much I forget how to do
that. Someone else can fill you in, and once you have the RB fixed I
STRONGLY recommend that you get rid of ALL things Norton on your machine.

Many thanks to all responders. This last sequence succeeded in my case --
recycle bin is clear of all prior file names and icons. Thanks, Gary.

I said "no way" to Norton a year ago and haven't missed a beat.

While I simply added to Don's and Glen's advice, I'm glad to hear you got it
fixed, and I'm also glad to hear that you've left Norton behind. Good work!

I'm afraid I don't see what was different from what I already told you to do, which
you said didn't work.....unless you had more than one partition and did not mention
that.

Not a thing different, though you went overboard ATTRIB command (it's not
necessary.) I think I just managed to put it down in a way that got through
to OP.

Yeah, I don't recall ever needing to use the attrib command for this, but the
apparently updated KB article mentions using it, so I threw it in as it won't hurt
anything.

Some of the older KB articles are being revised to include less information for 9x
users, it seems; and not entirely accurate either.

Figures. But heck, with what, a million KB articles(?), you'd think they'd
not be so stingy. Mere drops in an ocean.
