lutra - 27 Jun 2007 22:56 GMT Hello! I have ADOBE ACROBAT(4.0) on my system. I don't use it that often. Just on occasion I may need to print off a PDF file. But recently noticed that it is 4.0 and possibly need an upgrade. What do you recommend? It it necessary?

BTW, you can dramatically reduce the startup time by disabling unnecessary plugins:

(I got it when it was completely free for home use. The basic version is still free, there are some add-ons which you have to pay for but it does not sound like you would need them.)
Whatever minor advantages might come with Acrobat 6 vs 4 are probably not worth the bother. And I really do not like the fact that Acrobat just about doubles in size with every release.
Acrobat Reader 2 (1.4 MB) Acrobat Reader 3 (3.9 MB) Acrobat Reader 4 (5.2 MB) Acrobat Reader 4.05 (5.5 MB) Acrobat Reader 5.0 (8.4 MB) Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 (8.6 MB) Acrobat Reader 5.1 (13.0 MB) Acrobat Reader 6.0 (15.9 MB) Acrobat Reader 6.01 (16.3 MB) Acrobat Reader 7.05 (31.5 MB) <=== !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Acrobat Reader 7.07 (20.2 MB) Acrobat Reader 7.08 (20.3 MB) Acrobat Reader 7.0.9 (20.2 MB)
(Copied - minus sign of outrage - from www.oldversion.com - which, BTW, has the older versions of Fox Reader as well).

I used and recommended Foxit for quite a while but in the end I went back to Adobe because I encountered too many bugs, including printing problems. To make matters worse, Foxit's author(s) didn't seem really interested in fixing them.

lb - 28 Jun 2007 21:25 GMT > <SNIP> > [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > -- > Everyone who installs Vista is insane. I keep Adobe 5.05 as my default reader using Reader Speedup. I also have a copy of Foxit on my computer if I were to have issues with 5.05 reading a newer file type. Has not happened so far, I had to go from 4.0 to 5.05 to get Turbo Tax to work. I do not even try to print with Foxit.
rubyjack - 29 Jun 2007 03:50 GMT Do you know where I could get a copy of v5.05 (or there abouts)?
Thanks, Dan

rubyjack - 29 Jun 2007 17:11 GMT Many thanks, Daave. I have spent several hours at Adobe and in Google trying to find just such a link. And now I can find all kinds of Adobe files.

>>Maybe try the new version? > > Version 2.0? That's the one with the problems. :-( I have 1.3 Beta build 0429. Aside from being easier to use (the shortcuts in Acrobat never could stick in my mind), it seemed to be definitely faster and less buggy than acrobat 4, above which I did not want to go since as a rule I do not believe anything above ver. 4 is worth the bloat (new technology or hardware compatibility SOMETIMES being an acceptable excuse). Sometimes it seems authors purposely withhold basic features just to make people buy a newer version later.
I DL'd ver. 2 last night while answering the questions, and from what you are saying, it sounds like I would be better off not even bothering to install it...
Any additional comments welcome - I know you are a man of few (but VERY useful) words.

I tried to print a particular crossword again last night using Foxit Reader 2.0. It errored my machine twice, but in different ways. The first time the machine hung, the second time there was a "spooler error". This spooler error renders my printer unusable until after a reboot.
This is the problem document (3MB): http://www.mojaslovenija.net/upload/krizanka_mojaslovenija_junij.pdf
In the past when I was able to print similar documents, they came out striated. Acrobat has never had a problem with them.
Other problems I had with version 1.3 were an inability to display certain symbols (or was it dimensions?) in technical documents, and I don't mean Asian fonts. I saw others with the same problem at the Foxit forum.
Another annoyance is that Foxit launches a separate instance of itself for each PDF instead of a single instance, as does Acrobat.

I run into this damn Windows spooler problem almost every time I print, no matter what application, but I have just learned to live with having to reboot - often more than once - almost every time I use the printer - which, thankfully, is only about once a month. (In my own tiny world, I HAVE actually managed to go practically "paperless".)
The inability to display certain things properly was something I noticed even with Acrobat, and I just took it as an imperfection in (IMO) one of the most amazing developments in computer programming. It may well have been fixed in later versions, but I sure as heck wasn't going to DL a 30MB new version just to find out whether I would no longer have to spend hours (grin) figuring out whether maÇl stood for mail or mall.
I have a little Adobe book touting the then-new PDF format from over ten years ago, and it's an interesting publication (although of course, a little heavy on the sell side), but it was when I made a small PageMaker document with FORMATTED text in a weird font, a photo, and some grey blocks, and the PDF was CONSIDERABLY (like half or smth) smaller than the txt file and the jpg file together (with NO quality loss of course), that really blew my mind. I don't know HOW they do it but it is just amazing. In fact one of my many frustrations is that it is such a fantastic format and for a variety of reasons I almost never get to use it. It's like having a great toy which you are NOT allowed to use.
I'll DL the crossword and print it next time my printer is on, just out of curiosity. We'll see how Fox on 95B with 64MB of RAM handles it ;-) I never uninstalled Acrobat 4 so will see how THAT one handles it, too. (I have a feeling it's not going to be pretty, as they say.)
Will let you know - I know it's not that interesting, but I have a lot of time.

Still, Foxit is my default PDF reader. If I need to print *and* if I run into problems, then I fire up Adobe.
MEB - 29 Jun 2007 08:15 GMT Just an FYI:
Adobe 6.0.6 - 01-08-07, is the apparent last version/update.
To get to this version start with the 6.0.2 full install and update via its Update feature. It will need to run Java [includes its own version]. Very bulky, lots of memory required when running..
How bulky? Downloads at: 35,575 KB for the 6.0.2 full, and the updates at: 1,778 for 6.0.3; 1,048 for 6.0.4; 2,869 for 6.0.5; and 989 for 6.0.6.
Installs at 96.4 megs including the updates.
Yeah Foxit works for most functions, but note it now has a paid version as well, so your running crippleware.
