I went on a pruning binge in the Win98SE Start Menu folder in an
effort to lessen the number of programs that start with the OS bootup.
I went too far by deleting the "Accessories" folder with its arrows
pointing to Games, Communications etc. Where can I locate this folder
so I can copy it back to the Start Menu folder. Thanks.

Look in the Recycle Bin on the Desktop.
If the folders are there, select them all and click File menu> Restore.

If you haven't emptied your recycle bin, you can restore the folder back to
it's original location from there.  If you have permanently deleted the
folder from the recycle bin, I wouldn't worry.  They were just shortcuts
anyway.  If you want to add those shortcuts back onto the start menu, simply
go to:

Start Menu > Settings > Taskbar & Start Menu.  A box will open up with the
option called Start Menu.  There, you can add shortcuts back on to the start
menu by browsing for the program (they're all in the WINDOWS folder, by the
way).  Place them anywhere you want.  If you want to place them back in the
Accessories folder, you'll need to create the folder under the Programs tree.

Having got rid of that folder from the start menu, as I said earlier, is no
harm.  Leaving the start menu cluttered with programs does no harm either.
Windows does not load those programs up at startup.  But if you go to:

Start Menu > Programs > Startup, there you should see only a few programs
listed in that folder (if any at all).  Those are the programs that Windows
automatically loads at startup....hense the folder's name!

Paradox. I notice the Accessories folder in C:\ProgramFiles, but many
of the original entries are missing. Shall I just create sub-folders
in the main Accessories folder, then try to put as many of the
programs back again as I can remember?

Yes - that is the simplest procedure.  But you are putting back shortcuts to
the programs, not the programs themselves.

Thanks Jeff. By reconstructing this Accessories folder, I am only
putting in those items that I want. Is there anyway I can get the
original Accessories folder as it was from my Win98SE cd? I was
checking it out with 7Zip but was not sure where to go. Thanks.

If dissatisfied with choosing menu items (links) for
yourself, take paper & pencil and have a look at
/windows/start menu/accessories
It contains by default
/windows/start menu/accessories/communications
   with DUN
       direct cable connection
       internet connection wizard
       browser
   and so on
/windows/start menu/accessories/media apps
   with CD player
   movie player
   your CD RW pgm
   pictureviewer
   windows media player
   etc.
/windows/start menu/accessories/system tools
   character map
   DirectX Diagnostics
   cleanup
   defrag
   drivespace
   resources meter
   scandisk
   scheduled tasks
   system info
   WinZip
and who knows what else.

Because these folders are standard Win98 folders you
can paste into them shortcuts (LNK) files for what you
reuse, one by one, as the need arises.

Thank you Don. My problem was the complete deletion of the /Windows/
Start/Accessories folder, while trying to prune the entire start
folder. Initially, I thought I might be able to get the Accessories
folder off the Win98SE cd, but because of my non-techie abilities was
unable to locate it. That's when I set about reconstructing the
Accessories folder, which became an interesting, intense learning
experience. Were I able to locate the exact default Accessories folder
that I was so foolish to delete, then the solution was easy. However,
having seen what is in the default Accessories folder, I might only
want half of them in my choice Accessibility folder. I have an
extensive Quick Launch folder with some of these programs in it. As
well, I use many non-Microsoft programs (eg Firefox 2.0.0.8, Diskeeper
Lite, CCleaner, 7Zip etc) so many of these default utilities are not
relevant. Ken

Jeff. I was able to reconstruct my own "Accessories" folder with just
what I want. I am a non techie, not of the computer generation so this
was a genuine accomplishment for me.

Thanks for letting us know that you got it sorted out.

Repair Internet Explorer.  Yes, Internet Explorer.

Control panel
   Add/remove programs
       Hightlight Microsoft Internet Explorer
           Add/Remove button
               Tick "Repair"
