I can remove, but not disable the onboard graphics controller. A check of
"device usage" in it's properties, does not have a check box to disable it.
Of course when I remove the device from the system, it reloaded on reboot.
I've looked in the bios in hopes of disabling it there, but there is no
option there to allow that. The system is an hp pavilion xe735. Any and all
suggestions welcome.

Disable it in your BIOS (hardware configuration) setup.  Check your owner's
manual or http://www.hp.com/ for details.
