I've just put a new Sony CDRW into my system running on
ME, but it is not recognised as a CDRW. The system knows
the drive is there but cannot read or write to/from the
drive! Can anyone give me any clues?!

Did you install the driver, and any accompanying applications?

If not, boot to Safe Mode and remove any such drive in Device Manager.
Reboot to Normal Mode and direct the Hardware wizard to the driver CD,
when prompted for the driver.

When the drive is functioning correctly, install the acompanying apps.

I installed a CD burner app, but no driver CD came with
the hardware. The Sony website says that Windows drivers
will be used with the burner and will function correctly
with the drive.

OK, now what does Device Manager report about the drive's status?

And you will still have to install some writing software to do so with
the drive.

As I presume you mean "to no avail", what does the "burning" software
report about about the drive's status?
